  1. Plot Structure By: Meghan AmRhein Title: Maze Runner Author:

  2. EXPOSITION • The main character Thomas is introduced. Thomas is a character who loves to ask questions and is always curious about things. He always thinks things are his fault if they involve him. He thinks he has been to the Glade before but doesn’t remember anything. • In the start of the book Thomas has lost all memory of ever having a home, and is put in a place that the Gladers (people that live in the Glade) call the box. The box takes him to the Glade. • The Glade is the place that all the boys live in, and is located inside a large maze that is blocked off from the Gladers at night.

  3. EXPOSITION • A new person comes to the Glade in the box once a month. Only boys have ever come to the Glade and there are about 500 at the time Thomas comes. • Thomas meets a boy named Chuck and they become great friends. • Chuck is an uneasy but outgoing character who keeps to himself. He annoys Thomas because he doesn’t answer any of Thomas’s questions.

  4. EXPOSITION • In the maze that lays outside of the Glade, there are guards that are called Grievers. Griever’s are hideous monsters that are the size of a cow and have sharp metal points that stick out of them and hold a venom. • If you get stuck with one of the sharp points (or stung as the Gladers call it) you go through a series of phases called the changing. The changing is painful and some of the Gladers haven’t made it out alive. The people that usually get stung are the Runners. The runners are the people that go out into the maze during the day and map it out, trying to find a way out. The only problem is that the maze changes every day so maps don’t really do any good.

  5. RISING ACTION • On the second day that Thomas is at the Glade, Alby, the leader of the group takes him on a tour. The tour gets interrupted by a piercing alarm. The alarm signals that someone is coming up in the box. But people only come once a month and this time it was once in two days. Alby and second in command, Newt, go to check it out. They find a girl that looks dead. There has never been a girl come to the Glade before and everyone is freaked out. Alby and Newt accuse Thomas because they think that he had to do with it since he came a day before. Thomas thinks he knows the girl from somewhere but can’t remember where.

  6. RISING ACTION • The next day Thomas is eating breakfast when he sees a flash of silver run by him. He sees that it is a bug and he notices it as a beetle blade, and follows it through the dark woods. When he loses sight of it he stops to catch his breath, then he hears a stick snap. He gets scared and turns a corner to see what is was. When he turns the corner he sees the cemetery. Then he hears another stick snap. All of a sudden a boy starts running toward him and jumps on his back cutting him with a grave marker. The boy bites into his shoulder and Thomas flips him over and realizes itsBen. Ben is a guy who goes through the changing and goes crazy. He thinks that he has seen Thomas before he came to the Glade and he thinks he is bad and was sent by the Creators of the maze to spy on them.

  7. RISING ACTION • Alby shows up with a bow and arrow and threatens to shoot Ben if he doesn’t calm down and go back to the Homestead (the place where the Keepers sleep). Ben freaks out and tries to jump on Thomas and Alby shoots the bow and arrow hitting Ben in the cheek, snapping his neck back. Alby and Thomas think he is dead and leave him there. The next day Chuck tells Thomas that Ben didn’t die and that they are going to banish him that night. Thomas feels bad for the kid but is thankful that he doesn’t have to worry about him anymore.

  8. RISING ACTION • When a Glader’s get banished everyone is called to watch. Getting banished means they put you out in the maze at night with the Griever’s. No one has ever survived a night in the maze • The next day one of the runners tells Alby about a dead Griever that they found out in the Maze. Alby and the Keeper of the Runners, Minho, go out to see it. • Newt becomes worried when Alby and Minho aren’t back within 7 hours. • Thomas goes to the doors to see if he can see them through the maze and gets worried when the doors start to close. Then he sees them, Minho is dragging Alby and Thomas knows they aren’t going to make it.

  9. CLIMAX • When Thomas sees that they aren't going to make it he looks back at Newt. Newt knows what he is going to do and starts yelling not to do it, but Thomas does it. He slips into the Maze right before the doors close. • Minho makes his way to Thomas. Minho is scared and is positive that they are going to die • Thomas tries to convince him that they won’t die but he is scared and then he hears the moans of the Griever’s. Minho tells him to split up and then runs away.

  10. CLIMAX • Thomas realizes that Alby may be annoying but he can never leave a friend behind to die
