  2. Distribution • The Rainbow Smelt were originally found in the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans. They were introduced into Lake Michigan and throughout the years were spread into the Great Lakes. It was introduced by the fishermen who caught them and changed their location. Today it can be found in Delaware River in Pennsylvania.

  3. Effects on people • They have found to be an impact on other fish that humans eat as well. • Rainbow Smelt are also eaten by people. • They can effect the job of fishermen because they can decrease the population of other fish.

  4. Effects on Ecosystem Rainbow Smelt populations that are found in inland lakes can have negative effects on the lake community. The smelt concentrates PCBs in its fatty tissue, and magnifies it through the food chain. High mercury levels also accumulate in the top food chain predators.

  5. Reasons for Success As the populations of Rainbow Smelt continued to increase, the numbers reached a high enough level to make commercial fishing for Smelt profitable. This along with an increased popularity of recreational fishing for smelt has helped to control their numbers.

  6. Issues for the Future I do not believe that the fishermen will move the Rainbow Smelt from the location(s) they are in now. A trade-off of this decision is that while the fishermen are capturing these fish, their population can be in danger of decreasing. Although many fishermen capture them the might reproduce more fish and then the population will start to increase again. Their population will increase and decrease over time.
