  2. I. Brinkmanship A.The Belief that the United States could stop the spread of communism by promising to use all of its force including nuclear weapons against any aggressor nation. B. President Truman decided to develop the hydrogen bomb which was 67 more times powerful then the A-Bomb.

  3. II. Warsaw Pact A.W. Germany was allowed to rearm and join NATO. B.The Soviets felt threatened and formed their own military alliance with 7 other E. European countries known as the Warsaw Pact

  4. III. Eisenhower Doctrine • The Soviet Union supported Egypt which gained them respect in the Middle East. • In response President Eisenhower issued a warning stating that the United States would defend the Middle East against an attack by any communist country

  5. IV. Cold War in the Skies A. Space Race- 1957: Soviets launch Sputnik, the first satellite B. 1958: U.S. launches their first satellite

  6. C.U-2 incident: U.S. U-2 spy plane shot down over Soviet Union • Creates more tension between the two countries
