  11. The World Scene • Neutrino physics high priority internationally • European Strategy for PP • P5 report in the US • HyperK & J-PARC beam upgrade • Major projects on MEXT long-list for future projects • Expect decision to go ahead in next 2 years • UK major player in large international collaboration • LBNF • P5 recommended LBL Neutrino Facility as highest priority for the domestic program • Future of Fermilab is tied to LBNF • Make it a truly international endeavour • Funding agencies and members of LBNE and LBNO are forming new collaboration/project as we speak

  12. UK Strategy • Exploitation • T2K for next ~ 5 years • Submitted SoI and proposal to position ourselves for major contribution to either HyperK and LBNF • 3 year preparatory phase • Several 10s of M£ over 10 years later • Push for 2 experiments • 10 + 10 = 14 institutions across the UK • Exploit synergies between experiments • Beam / targetry • DAQ • Near detectors

  13. Oxford Strategy • Position ourselves to play leading role whatever happens • Very active in LBNF and HyperK proposal • DAQ WP leader in both (Barr) • LBNF UK project manager (Weber) • Near Detector studies (LBNF WP manager: Weber) • HyperK UK co-leader (Wark) • Develop skills and expertise • 35 ton LAr prototype • CERN LAr test beam (aka WA105) • 1 kton H2O prototype • Don’t wait for physics in 10+ years • Exploit T2K • LAr Data analysis with MicroBooNE/LAr1-ND

  14. Activities on T2K • Background • Running for the next 5 years, mix of nu and anti-nu • Physics • Oscillation & cross sections • Hardware • DAQ & electronics support • Leadership • Electronics, DAQ, near detector • EC, UK spokesperson • Manpower • Ac: Barr, Wark, Weber • RAs: Dewhurst, Lu • Students essential to exploit physics

  15. Future Sensitivity

  16. Physics • Need more sensitive experiments • HyperK • H2O-Cherenkov, 1 Mton, 300 km baseline • 800 MeV neutrinos • No matter effect • Massive statistics • 750 kW beam power • LBNF • LAr, 40 kton, 1300 km baseline • 1000-6000 MeV neutrinos • Moderate matter effects • High resolution detector • 1.0  2.2 MW beam power • Both are needed to over-constrain neutrino-mixing
