  1. Turn and Talks 101:Speaking Clearly and Listening Actively?

  2. STEP 1 Re-set and check desk expectations. • Scholars should have relevant materials for the T&T on their desks . . . and nothing else.

  3. STEP 2 State the prompt. • Scholars have 30 seconds to “write to think.”

  4. STEP 3 Designate the SPEAKER. • The speaker addresses the T&T prompt. • Use “ACE” • Answer • Cite Evidence • Explain

  5. STEP 4 Designate the LISTENER. The listener . . . • Makes eye contact • Nods • Jots down notes • Asks clarifying questions

  6. STEP 5 What To Do: Explain Partner Switch. • Student A speaks; Student B listens; Student B paraphrases • SWITCH • Student B speaks; Student A listens; Student A paraphrases • REFLECT

  7. STEP 6 Indicate total time. • The speaker will have 60 seconds. • The timer will go off. • The listener will have 30 seconds to paraphrase.

  8. STEP 7 Ready Position. • Turn towards each other and make eye contact.

  10. STEP 9 Stop. Paraphrase. • The listener paraphrases the speaker’s ideas using “ACE.” • What was their answer? • What evidence did they cite? • What was their explanation?

  12. STEP 11 Stop. COLD CALL. • Listeners should be able to paraphrase the speaker’s “ACE”
