  3. 30%-50%-70% Scenarios At the PPRP’ had requested three reduced scenarios were considered. GridPP3

  4. Timeline – 2 6th Dec – PPRP recommend to SC Science Committee 8th Nov –PPRP Visiting Panel PPARC Council Grants etc. Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May GridPP3

  5. GridPP3 Project Approved At the end of last week, funding for GridPP3 was announced: £25.9m of new money plus contingency etc (£30m project). GridPP1: Sep 2001 – Sep 2004, £17.0m or £5.7m/year. GridPP2: Sep 2004 – Sep 2007, £15.9m or £5.3m/year. GridPP2+: Sep 2007 – Apr 2008 GridPP3: Apr 2008 – Apr 2011, £25.9m or £7.2m/year. Clearly in the current funding environment, this is a very good outcome, reflecting the good work that is presently being done at institutes throughout the UK. The total funding is consistent with the “70%” scenario presented to PPRP. GridPP3

  6. Next… • In the next few weeks, the whole project must be re-planned within the constraints of the announced funding. • Hardware Issues: • CPU costs; Disk costs; Tape storage; Specialised hardware? Non-capacity machines. Timing of hardware purchases. • Staff cost Issues: • Results of re-grading exercise at many institutes. • Transition details (end-dates/start-dates for ~75 GridPP2/GridPP3 posts). • Outcome of planning (to be approved by CB, OC, PPARC ) will be: • A GridPP3 Project Plan • A GridPP2/3 Transition Plan. • (i.e. Many details are not yet finalised!) 7. The Future We have the resources to develop a Tier-1 for Atlas, CMS, and LHCb (just-in-time) for LHC data. But, need to quadruple the capacity this year: Requires a “multi-million pound” hardware purchase in FY07. August 28 We have the resources to develop the Tier-2s. We need to optimise the CPU/Disk ratio (require 3; currently 15!). Site readiness review. October 13 GridPP3

  8. The Credibility Gap We recognise that we have the funding to buy and operate hardware resources and have the funding to deploy and operate a Grid. “If you build it they will come” But will they be able to use it? We have no application support/development within the UK experiments; no middleware development and rather too little middleware support in GridPP3. Thus, the success of all the investment in GridPP (£60m) and the UK LHC groups now relies critically on (a) partner projects delivering and supporting middleware; (b) effort elsewhere developing and supporting the key applications. With no influence, we are now vulnerable. The danger here is that, despite sufficient resources, we limp along, lagging behind other nations, because we just can provide the necessary support to address the problems that will arise. This directly threatens timely physics output. GridPP3

  9. Conclusion GridPP3 has been funded at the level of £25.9m. I believe, in the perspective of the current funding problems, the outcome is very good and recognises both the excellent work that is going on within GridPP by many people at institutes throughout the UK and the scientific importance of the imminent turn-on of the LHC. There is now a lot of detailed planning to be done and there are substantial challenges ahead. These are exciting times! GridPP3
