  1. Bible Basics Sunday School Class Sunday, September 22, 2013

  2. Memory Verse • “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” - John 1:14 • What does this verse tell us? • Greatest verse about the incarnation (Jesus’ embodiment in flesh) • The Greek term for “took up residence” has reference to tenting • Jesus is the friend who dwells among us • For the whole context, read John 1:1-18

  3. Today’s Lesson: Abraham • Recap Abraham’s story from Genesis 11-25 • Other readings on Abraham • Share thoughts on this week’s homework • Apply Abraham’s story to our lives • Dig into one theme: blessing

  4. Other Readings on Abraham • Abram’s calling • Galatians 3:16 • Abraham sacrifices Isaac • James 2:21 • Romans 4:1-3 • Hebrews 11:17-19 • Abraham’s faith • Romans 4:13-25

  5. The Story Finds its Place in Me • Think of a time when you felt like God was asking something of you. How did you recognize God’s voice? How did you respond?

  6. The Story Finds its Place in Me • Our decisions to obey or disobey God have far-reaching consequences. Who are the people in your life directly affected by your decision to follow God? How does their presence affect how you perceive the call to obey?

  7. The Story Finds its Place in Me • Abraham obeyed God long before he could see the end result of his obedience. What would it mean for you to trust God and obey without seeing the result immediately or in the near future?

  8. The Story Finds its Place in Me • Abraham not only believed God but also demonstrated his trust in God through obedience. What would it look like for you to demonstrate your trust in God through obedience in your current circumstances?

  9. One of Abraham’s Themes: Blessing • Think of a time when someone blessed you. Share your experience with the group. • Describe a time when you were a blessing to others, either intentionally or inadvertently.

  10. Wrap Up • How can we use Abraham’s story to better know, love, obey, serve, and worship God?

  11. Homework • Read Jacob’s story in Genesis 25:19 – 35:29 • Study his story using your Bible reference materials • Complete the homework handout • Check out the Sunday school blog at gracebiblebasics.wordpress.com
