  2. Agenda • Introduction • FYP assessment • Schedule for FYP 2017 • Issues related to supervision • Requirements for the proposal • Q&A

  3. Final Year Project (FYP) –introduction • Every student must complete a final year project (FYP) in his/her final-year of study • Project is implemented by 1 student (Degree) and 2/3 students for HD • Project = 6 credits (= 2 subjects!!!) • The FYP can have significant impact in your overall result

  4. FYP • If you want a better GPA then you should do well in your FYP • Your FYP grade may affect your degree classification • If a student is in the borderline between a second-class upper or a second-class lower then if the student gets an “B+” in the FYP then most likely the student will get a “Second-Class Upper honours” because of the FYP grade

  5. Importance of FYP • In a job interview, most of the time questions related to your FYP will be raised • FYP can also be not very important?! • If you have a AGPA of 3.3 • You do not bother!!!! • But if you have a GPA of 3.68 then it may be critical! (as 3.7x is the First class honour)

  6. Why you need to do FYP? • FYP provide you the trainings in • To work indepedently!!!! • To “solve problem by yourself” • To time manage • To self-learn • To apply knowledge learnt in practice • To present your results (verbal and writing) • So projects in different areas can achieve the above tasks

  7. Stages for implementing a FYP • Select a project or self-propose • Submit a proposal (5%) • Submit a mid-term report (20%) • Your mid-term report (10%) • There will be 10-min presentation to report your progress (10%) • Final report (40%) • Final presentation (25%) • Continuous assessment (10%)

  8. Stages for implementing a FYP

  9. What is the best method to implement a project? • Hard work • Hard work • Hard work • If you work hard then you will get good grade!!!!!

  10. Best method • Talk to your supervisor on a regular basis • In most cases, your supervisor will help!!! • Check your email (@connect.polyu.hk) on a regular basis as some supervisors will only communicate via email!!!

  11. Types of EE project • Common project in the following areas • Building hardware • Writing software • Develop of a system consisting of hardware and software • Experimental projects • Site measurements projects • Desktop study type projects

  12. Conclusion • It is your project not your supervisor’s project!!! • Doing a FYP is not time-effective ?! • We expect you to spend 260 hours on your project • Your FYP, in theory, will occupy more time than studying for two subjects!!!! • So you must have an early start!

  13. How to choose your project • Fill in the online form • https://myacs.polyu.edu.hk/utils/mysurvey/index.php/577624/lang-en • Go to ftp.ee.polyu.edu.hk/yffung/FYP_201718 • You have 5 choices according to priority • Assignment will first consider the first choice • Just like JUPAS application

  14. How project is assigned? • If a project is only selected by one student then the student will be assigned to the project by default • If the project is chosen by more than one students as first choice then the Project Supervisor will assign the project

  15. For TSE students • Dr Jinwoo Lee will join the Department in August • Dr Barbara Siu, Dr Mark Hsu and Prof. Prof A Sumarlee from CEE Department

  16. Self-propose • Find a staff willing to supervise your project • Complete and submit the form • Ask the supervisor to sign it • Project committee will study your proposal to check if it can meet the standard

  17. Various issues related to FYP • Can I change my FYP topic? • Yes, you can change the topic and you must inform project coordinator as soon as possible • Can I change my FYP supervisor? • Yes, you must first get the consensus from your current supervisor to release you then find someone else willing to supervise you • Must inform Project Coordinator with supporting document (could be an email) from both supervisors • Deadline early October 2017

  18. Issues related to FYP • How to get more time? • You can apply for extension • There will be penalty (a 0.5 grade point reduction) • Extended project will be assessed in Sem 3 of 2017/18 • Can I spend more money than 3K? • Yes, you can but the Department will only reimburse you 3K • You can only get the reimburse after the FYP is completed (ie in June 2018)
