  1. Fish Designs

  2. Pectoral & Pelvic Fins • Used to turn, brake and balance the fish

  3. Dorsal and Anal fins • Vertical fins used as stabilizers

  4. Adipose Fin

  5. Caudal fin • Used in propulsion in high speed fish

  6. Caudal Fin • Can increase vertically to increase surface area to develop thrust

  7. Increased Surface Area • Although increases Thrust, it also increases Drag • The efficiency of the design represented by: • Aspect ratio = fin height2/fin area Heterocercal tail AR=7 to 10 Gives lift (no swim bladder) and thrust Bad at maneuvering

  8. AR=1 At slow speeds good for maneuvering AR=5 good for propulsion and fast maneuvering AR=3 good for fast speeds and maneuvering AR=7 to 10 Good for fast cruising bad for maneuvering

  9. Lateral Line • The lateral line is a system of sense organs found in aquatic vertebrates, mainly fish, used to detect movement and vibration in the surrounding water.

  10. Operculum • a flap of the bony fish covering the gills
