No other sport can be said to rival the prestige and excitement of polo. As the world’s oldest team sport, it has long been regarded as “the game of kings” – and snow polo, played on compacted snow or a frozen lake, certainly “the king of games.” Snow polo originated in 1985, when the first match was played on the frozen surface of Lake St. Moritz in Switzerland. Since then, the sport – in effect, “hockey on horseback” – has increasingly become a favourite of both players and spectators alike, noted for its pace of play given a smaller playing field and fewer riders. In Canada, the Snow Polo Charity Classic will mark the sport’s major debut, set within the charm and hospitality of idyllic Collingwood. A standard game of snow polo is comprised of four seven-minute periods known as “chukkers,” with two teams made up of three players on each side. The aim is to score goals by driving the ball down the field and into the opposing team’s goal, while preventing the other side from doing the same. After each goal, teams switch ends to account for any wind or field advantage that may exist. As the game is being played on snow, the ball is usually brightly coloured and the horses fitted with special shoes for better traction.
