Workshop Goals • Share knowledge about mechanisms that prevent & limit unnecessary immigration, with a focus on alternatives to detention. • To share strategies on how to engage with governments on implementing these mechanisms. • To equip participants with knowledge of key concepts on preventive monitoring of immigration detention and the role of NGOs in relation to monitoring. • To facilitate networking and future collaboration; feed into IDC’s work and strengthening the EU regional immigration detention network.

  5. IDC Strategic Priorities IDC strategic priorities for 2013-2015: • Ending and limiting detention, particularly for children • Developing and promoting alternatives to immigration detention • Improving rights, conditions and monitoring of detention facilities

Detention context and implementation of ATD – opportunities and challenges You have 45 mins to prepare a 10 minute presentation on: • Brief immigration detention context: trends and main concerns • What ATD are available in law, policy and practice? How are these being implemented? • What opportunities/challenges are there for introducing new ATD, expanding or improving existing ATD? Think about what we’ve heard already today – EU law and how it’s being transposed, the broad range of ATD…
