World Soft Commodities Market Demand (1)

Athena Tradewinds Pvt. Ltd.

Change in World Grain Use Since 2000

World Population Growth, Mil

  • Gradual increase of world population adds to the global demand for agricultural products and energy
  • The  production  of  bio-fuels (bio-diesel and bio-ethanol) is  experiencing  rapid  growth  in USA and European Union   countries.
  • Increase in per capita meat consumption in BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India China). As the demand for meat rises, the demand for grain and protein feeds used to produce the meat grows proportionally
  • Global Political and Economical issues as the North African/Mideast unrest, Russia grain export ban, Japan’s Nuclear tragedy also have its impact on agricultural commodity trade

Production and Import Split of Pulses, Mil MT

  • India is the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulse crops, which are an important source of protein in the Indian diet.
  • Despite the gradual growth of own pulsars production (to 14,7 mln. mt. in 2009/10), India’s imports of pulse crops (Dry Peas, Lentils and Kabuli Chick Peas) continue to increase. In 2009/10, India imported a record 2 million tones (MT) of Dry Peas compared to an annual average of about 0.5 Mt for the 5 previous years.
  • Given persistently high prices and that the demand for pulse crops is expected to exceed production by about 3 Mt, the imports of pulse crops remain duty-free.

Indian government admits an importance of increased pulsars import in view of inability of local growers to supply the demand of rising population size

vegetable oil market overview
Vegetable Oil Market Overview

Athena Tradewinds Pvt. Ltd.

Global Vegetable Oil Demand

  • Vegetable oil consumption in India has nearly doubled in the last five years, making India the largest consumer of vegetable oil, beating China to the top slot 2009/2010. Despite that growth, India’s per capita vegetable oil consumption is a relatively low 13.4 kilograms for 2010-2011, versus the world average of about 21 kg.

Source: AgResource

  • Global Industry Analysts announces the release of a comprehensive global report on Vegetable Oils markets. The global market for Vegetable Oils is forecast to reach 169 Million Metric Tons by 2015. Key factors fuelling market growth include recovery from economic recession, increasing global population, and growing demand from emerging markets backed by strong economic growth, and increasing standard of living.

Vegetable oil consumption in India is expected to keep increasing due to steady popu- lation growth and a good supply of vegetable oils, of which about half is imported.
