  2. WARNING: Before we start this unit you need to understand that humans are worshiped during this time– so their naked body is done as art– you might see pictures in this chapter that are ART and not to be giggled over like grade 4 students!

  3. The Renaissance – An introduction… • The Renaissance was the period of time found approximately between 1450 and 1600 CE • Renaissance (rɪˈneɪs(ə)ns,-ɒ̃s/) • noun • the revival of European art and literature under the influence of classical models in the 14th–16th centuries.

The Renaissance • This was a period of time where “ideas were reborn” • These ideas included: • What was meant by “nationhood” • Art and Architecture • Revolutionary Ideas • It was a period in time where great leaps forward were made in European culture and knowledge • Especially in the Arts and Sciences…

  5. Renaissance Society • This society was much different than the feudal society of the Middle Ages • Instead of being based around the manor and the castle, towns and villages flourished • The views of society also changed • People were more interested in leisure and studying new and fresh ideas; medieval life was focussed more on the short term and was full of suffering

  6. Shifts in Art and Mind • People of the Renaissance were tired of the art and world view of the feudal time • Saw it as a “dark age of stagnation” • Renaissance artists shifted towards communicating a sense of beauty through art – they began to celebrate the human form • A shift towards more philosophical thinking was also experienced • People were now exposed to thoughts of how they could not only improve themselves, but also their community

  7. Where did it all begin? • The Renaissance began in Italy • Any suggestions why? (think of Rome and its characteristics) • Most of Italy still used Roman Law • This encouraged trade & was “clearer” than medieval law… • There were many Roman ruins for inspiration • The architecture was ahead of its time…

Why start in Italy? continued… • Geography was on the side of Italy • Italy was a central location in Europe and around the Mediterranean • Climate was suitable • Allowed for Italian merchants to travel and learn new ideas from the East • Ports in Venice and Genoa allowed sea access • Road systems were establishedas well
