  7. Empathizing with your learners Imagine your learners on the very first day of class, in the first course they are taking in the program. What questions or concerns do you think might be on their minds?

  8. Will my online learning experience be impersonal? Will I feel isolated? Can I afford this degree … will it pay off? Are my skills as a “student” rusty? WHAT IF I FAIL? How will I balance the demands of work, family, and school?

The Value of Values Affirmation Students leverage their own independent values to overcome social identity threats (Tibbets) Removes psychological and emotional impediments of performance (Jordt) Particularly effective at a key time of academic transition (Borman) Positive effects persist years after the affirmation experience (Tibbets) (Jordt et. al., 2017, Borman, 2016, Tibbets et. al. 2016)

  10. Example Where you are now in your life? What are your aspirations, your near-term goals? Identify one. How will the strengths you identified in the first exercise help you attain this goal? What other strengths might you want to develop or improve in order to attain the goal?

Embedding SAIL in a Course Experience Northeastern Students for Giving: Course in which students develop an understanding of the considerations and complexities of philanthropy through firsthand experience with grant making. • Beginning and End of Course: • What do you think are the 6most important competencies, skills, and attributes (CSAs) of a social change leader? Rank in order of importance. • Rate yourself on a scale of 1-10 and explain why. • Findings: • Ranking of systems thinking increased in perceived importance. • Process: • Each class begins with $10K • Manage all stages of the a funding cycle from conducting needs assessments through making grant determinations. • Many students gave themselves lower scores at the end of the course, explaining that they had not gotten worse, but had over-estimated their performance to begin with.
