  2. Outline • Brief review of B08FDP training activities • The first training workshop • The second training workshop • Outcome from B08FDP training • Future training plan (a possible extended-activity of WWRP FDP---B08, WENS,?)

  3. The 1st raining (10-20 April 2007, Beijing) • Trainees: Forecasters from BMB & other weather offices of CMA, local champions • Focuses: Knowledge on nowcasting (radar, severe weather), and on major functions and products of participant systems

  4. Agenda for the first period of Training 1-11 Apr. 2007 Focusing on basic knowledge 75 forecasters 2-day lectures By Jim, Paul, Tony, Alan

  5. Agenda for the second period of Training 12-20 Apr. 2007 Focusing on FDP 14 forecasters Teaching by Jim, Paul, Alan, Tony, Linus, Jishan, Mingxuan with Prepared documents and/or DVD

  6. The 2nd training (7-12 July 2008, Beijing) • Trainees: Local champions, forecasters from BMB/CMA and Aviation Meteorological Center • Focuses: The performance of each participating system, especially common products, such as storm tracks and accumulated precipitation

  7. 6 weather cases in 2007 trial were selected • Decision Points were chosen for all cases • An Uniform PPT module was used • A training webpage was setup before the workshop To make an interactive training mode 10 experts were teachers: ——Jim, Paul, Mingxun, Waikin, Yerong, Beth, Tony, Jisong, Xiaonong etc.

Outcome of B08FDP training • Made in-depth, first hand knowledge accessible to the forecasters and local champions • Improved the forecasters’ general knowledge on nowcasting • Helped make BMB local champions more familiar with B08FDP products and systems’ running flow • Greatly enhanced forecasters’ capability to apply B08FDP products in the weather service for B08 Olympics

  9. Future training plan • Nowcast training workshop to Asian forecasters • Demands from Asia (HIW, developing status…) • Goals of WWRP-NWG (to meet the needs of the members of WMO to improve their prediction of and response to HIW) When, Where, How?

WMO RMTC-Nanjing undertakes 1-2 training courses every year • The Beijing component of RMTC-Nanjing was incepted in 2003, since then, it began to conduct some training and education events Over 300 trainees from Developing Countries have been received, which contributed to the development of WMO Education & Training program

Important steps for initiation • To be endorsed as one of WMO WWRP training programs in 2011 to 2012 • To send a formal letter to CMA asking for holding the Asian training workshop by WMO WWRP (by the end of Jun 2011) • To make focal points both from WWRP-NWG and local host (CMA-RMTC or ?) • …
