The Pentagon • The pengtagon has been a historical building in the United States for years. • It is the largest office building in the world.
The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense. • It is located in Arlington, Virginia. • The pentagon is located between the Pentagon Lagoon and the southeastern corner of Arlington National Cemetery.
Construction • The Pentagon was designed by George Bergstrom and built by John McShain. • Construction began on September 11, 1941, and was completed on January 15, 1943 • The cost of the construction was around $83 million • 284 bathrooms, 16,250 lighting fixtures, and 7,754 windows. • Houses about 24,000 civilian and military employees
The Pentagon is the largest office building. • It is a five sided, five story building. • The building rests on 41,492 concrete piles. • The building takes up 29 acres. • The office of the chief architect rapidly grew to 327 architects and engineers who were supported by 117 field inspectors. • The floor space of the pentagon is three times that of the Empire State Buiding.
9/11 • On September 11, 2001 the pentagon was hit by a 757 jet airplane at 9:43a.m. • When American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon's exterior wall, it created a hole approximately 75 ft. Wide.
