Case Study: MLB’s Drug Problem • Read article • Discuss in small groups • Answer questions • There are many alternative answers, so try to generate multiple explanations or a different line of reasoning. • This is a good practice for exams, so take your own notes! • Present & discuss in plenary

Questions to Consider • Which personality traits may influence a baseball player’s behavior? • Which traits (if any) seem irrelevant ? • Which situational factors influence behavior? • Do any of the situational factors seem to have a stronger impact than other factors? • How can we use interactions to explain behavior? • Apply each of the 3 interactions to further explain the players’ behavior. • As a consultant, how could you create a plan to reduce illegal substance abuse using the PXS Interaction Framework?

  6. The PXS Interaction Framework Interaction 1 Different people react to the same situation in different ways. Interaction 2 Certain people can influence situations more than others. Interaction 3 Different people select themselves into different situations.

Not useful? • Personality is not a guaranteed accurate predictor. • Situations • Norms, Strong Situations • Measurement Problems • Projection, fundamental attribution error, Barnum effect, stereotypes… • Exact behaviors • Single observation, single Behavior • Self Monitoring • Behave according to situational demands • Personality will predict behavior when… • Raters are familiar with the person being rated. • There are multiple behavioral observations. • There are multiple observers.
