  6. Unmet Need of Contraception.. • Unmet need of contraception has decreased from 24.7% in 1953 to16.2% in 2000-Sri Lanka Demographic Survey 2000 • Couples seem to fill this unmet need by resorting to illegal abortion

  7. Abortion Illegally Induced 26(11.6%) • 30 deaths • 11.6 % direct obstetric deaths • 8.6 % all deaths Five deaths under 19 years

  8. Indirect Causes • 74 deaths • 24 % of all deaths • Commonest heart disease One in four maternal deaths is from indirect causes

  9. Complications of LSCS and Anaesthesia • 12 deaths • 4 % of all deaths • 8 of 12 due to emergency LSCS

  11. Conclusion • Sri Lanka has done well in reducing maternal mortality • However much needs to be done • Different strategies need to be considered and implemented at this period. • This is a bigger challenge Sri Lanka has to face.
