  3. Service Overview • CASTOR • 2 x 3 Node Oracle Clusters for Primary Databases • Identical Setup for Standby Systems • 2 Node Pre-Production Oracle Cluster • Single Instance Certification Database • Single Instance Logging Database

  4. Service Overview • LFC and FTS • 3 Node Oracle Cluster • No Standby System • LFC for non-LHC Experiments • ATLAS 3D (Conditions) • 3 Node Oracle Cluster using Streams • Production Tier1 MySQL • Helpdesks, Accounting etc

  5. Service Configuration • All Databases Now Running Oracle 11.2.0.3 • Monitoring via Internal Grid Control and Tier1 Production Team via Nagios • Standardised Infrastructure

  6. Service Retirements • LHCB Conditions and LFC Retired in October • At Request of LHCB • ATLAS Tags Database Retired in December • Low Usage, Unnecessary for ATLAS

Key Developments • Upgrade to 11gR2 • No more reliance on outdated Oracle software • Changes to CASTOR Performance Tuning and Procedures • No database call outs in 2013 • Improved Staff non-Oracle Skills • Greater push to use MySQL in future • New Oracle Licensing Agreement • No restrictions on scalability • Hardware Requirements for 2013 Established

  12. Current Issues • Ageing Non-CASTOR Infrastructure • Delays in Hardware Deployments • Team Lead Departure and Recruitments • Contractor to fill skills shortfall in short term • 2 posts to be filled • Site Network Issues • Particular issue for LFC service

Developments for 2013-14 • Hardware Refresh for Non-CASTOR Systems • Requirements established, working on implementation planning • Replace Disk Sub-Systems (EMC Arrays) • Standby (Off Site) Systems for LFC, FTS • Run Production FTS3? • Plan for CASTOR Databases to 2019 • Plan for Increased Use of MySQL (potentially for LFC, FTS)

  14. Parting Thoughts • Databases are reliable and fit for purpose • Key technical challenges have been met • Tier1 as a project functions well • Oracle dependencies are being broken (good thing) • Long term less reliance on DB Services from Tier1

  15. New Team Leader • John Casson • Asked by SCD management to be temporary team leader until a full time replacement is found • Leading the team and learning DBA skills on the job • Experience delivering production services • GOCDB, JISCMail, APEL • Experience as a database user + some DB administration • Keen to be closely involved in Tier 1 operations
