  4. The story arc/plotline

  5. Exposition • Setting and characters are established • Main conflict is introduced • Conflict: opposition of person or forces

  6. Rising Action • The main conflict is dealt with through action • The main character is aware there is a conflict and takes steps to battle crisis

  7. Climax • The high point/moment of greatest tension. May be physical, emotional or mental.

  8. Falling Action • Story begins to wind down • Results/consequences of decisions character has made

  9. Resolution • The end/dénouement. Conflicts resolved, loose ends tied up, happy or sad ending.

  10. The devil is in the details

  11. As we read story… • Trace story arc • Consider author’s decisions • Consider literary devices such as repetition
