  1. The One over the World Speed Tour of Emergency Management Today Or When did all this change…I didn’t get the memo… Craig A. Marks, CERP, CEM, CAS…tour guide

  2. Who Wants to be a HYPOCRITE Warm Up Game…

  3. Everybody raise you hand Da Rules • As we list the following items keep your hand UP if you have it… if you don’t…put it down • A written BC/BR Plan • Have ever had an Exercise • Have exercised with EM • Have a written Family Plan • Have 96 hrs of food/water • Have a disaster kit in your car

  4. ICS for the Spelling Impared

  5. Why do I need to know ICS? • Because crisis, disaster or catastrophe WILL happen to you. • It’s the “new normal” • National Incident Management System (NIMS) • NFPA-1600 • Brings you in sync with the first responders • In a large event… ain’t nobody coming… • Our litigious society expects you to have AND EXECUTE • a plan • It’s YOUR COMPANY… You’ll either lead, • follow…or get the hell out of the way… take charge!

  6. The 8 steps to success • Be Informed … Know who is coming • Develop a Business Continuity Plan • Prepare your Emergency Plan • PRACTICE your Emergency Plan • Review your insurance…and have it available off-site • Secure your Facility and Equipment • Improve Cyber Security – Maintain Redundancy • Promote Family and Individual Preparedness When disaster strikes it is NOT the time to make new friends.

  7. What is ICS? • It IS NOT a miracle… it is a management system • Developed by the US Forest Service for Western Wild Fires • Now Implemented Across the US by Executive Order • By SEP 2006 ALL First Responders must be Trained to ICS-200 • NOT just for Emergencies…Implement for any function • Provides a template for seamless interoperability between YOU • and first responders.

  8. The ICS Model Incident Commander Safety Officer Public Info. Officer Liaison Officer Operations Planning Logistics Finance/ Admin. Info/Intel Don’t be a FLOP…. USE FLOP!

  9. The ICS Approach • Incident Commander – MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE…not necessarily the • highest ranking corporate officer (EM Coordinator) • Section Chiefs – MUST be trained in their jobs… NO OJT • Special Staff – PIO is CRITICAL…don’t leave it to a secretary. • ICS allows interoperability with first responders and allows the CEO to • make timely decisions • Involve Board and other key officers • Involve legal staff • Get in front of issues – Proact…not React • Takes the disaster and breaks it into manageable elements, accomplished by • knowledgeable staff • System documents actions for later financial reimbursement • Checklists and SOPs provide the 80% solution

  10. If it’s not one thing… It’s another…
