The Enlightenment As reflected in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad
Main Enlightenment Ideals • Mankind is (are) born free! • People have natural rights: life, liberty and property (All people—cultural tolerance) • Mankind controls its own fate • Secularism • Logic / reason / science / math / PROCESS • Mankind is selfish—Hobbes • Emphasis on trial and error of new ideas • Government—separation of powers (Monty) • Emphasis on solving social problems
Which are “Celebrated” in Amistad? • Men are born free • Logical process of reasoning to find solutions • Men are responsible for their own fate • Men have natural rights (All…) • Etc.
Topic Sentence • Hook • Author / Title Information • Topic Sentence • Reference to 3 claims • Key words from prompt (to be used throughout!)
Claims • The point a writer is about to make with evidence/data • Based upon the topic sentence • Specific • Introduces data / evidence • Short—typically a single sentence! • “One of the most prominent Enlightenment ideas reflected in Amistad is_____________.”
Data / Evidence • Proof of what the writer just “claimed” is true • When writing about text (novel, poem, essay, newspaper article, blog, etc.) USE QUOTED TEXT!! • When using a film, use a brief but detailed description of the scene OR a quote IF you have the VERBATIM quote.
Warrant/Commentary • Most DIFFICULT part of essay • This part EXPLAINs HOW the data is an example of the claim. • Answers the question So What? after reading the data / evidence. • Can be multiple sentences but NOT more than 3-4 • IF QUOTE OR SCENE NEEDS INTERPRETATION, THAT COMES FIRST IN A WARRANT (poetry, complex quoted material)
Keys • Key words and ideas (synonyms) repeated throughout TS, CDW’s and CS • What are keys to Enlightenment prompt? • Warrants EXPLAIN the data and how it proves the claim. • Conclusive Sentence does NOT repeat topic sentence—offer something new!
Silly Example • Prompt: • Explain how Mrs. Mimna and Mr. Youmans attempt to keep control in the overly large Interdisc classroom, but ultimately fail and might change careers soon. • Brainstorm three ways: • Yelling “Shut Up” at repeat offenders • Creating a seating chart that utilizes space “effectively” • Docking students’ points when they refuse to control their mouths… • The “Look” • The threat of a detention with Mrs. Mimna
Claim • Mrs. Mimna and Mr. Youmansemploy many methods to control the gargantuan ID classes, the most oft-used being sheer yelling (however ineffective).
Data / Evidence • For example (one example is, to illustrate, one incident reflects this, ….) • Be sure to introduce data!!!! To illustrate, Mrs. Mimna often simply yells “Shut-up!” in a loud, grating voice directed toward the offending parties.
Warrant / Commentary • Answers the question SO WHAT? About the data: So why is this example valid? • One would think the repetitive, loud, grating voice of an authority figure would be effective. However, after the initial quiet period, the talking begins anew, therefore; Mrs. Mimna thinks about retiring every day b/c she wants to teach, not babysit.
Conclusive Sentence • What not to do? • Attempt to end essay with relevant, NEW material. (takes practice!) • For Example: On the prompt of Mrs. Mimna / Mr. Youmans: • Instead of restating how we try, but fail to keep control….. • Perhaps Mrs. Mimna should find a new career given the fact that she is not very adept at controlling bratty teenagers. While her efforts are admirable, her results are abominable. (This is advice—it’s new and relevant to the topic.)
