Growing Pains • Why would a population increase of only 2 percent lead to a population explosion in India? • India already has a billion people. • In 40 years, a 2 percent increase would result in an additional half billion people. • What percentage of the world’s population lives in South Asia? • About 22 percent • Basic necessities are not being met • Inadequate resources to meet those needs

Managing Population growth • Why are large families still considered desirable despite concerns about population? • Children supplement income • Children support parents in old age • Why is education fundamental in the slowing of population growth? • Health education can reduce the need for large families by reducing infant mortality rate • Educated parents will be less reliant on their children to supplement family income • What difficulties are South Asian governments encountering in providing adequate education? • Inadequate funds • Inability to keep up with needs of  population
