What is legislation and codes of practice? • Legislative requirement: A duty to act according to the law as defined in an Act of Parliament and usually enforceable through the courts • Code of Practice: A set of rules outlining how a person in a particular profession or situation is expected to behave • Statutory code of practice: A Code of Practice approved by Parliament and admissible as evidence in any legal action

The Equality Act 2010 Unifies previously piecemeal legislation and protects people from discrimination involving:- • Race (including ethnic or national origins, colour and nationality) • Sex /Sexual orientation • Disability • Religion or belief (including lack of belief) • Gender reassignment (transsexual) • Pregnancy and maternity • Marriage and civil partnership • Age
What do we mean • Inclusion – at a teaching level each facilitator has a responsibility to ensure everyone in the class is included • Differentiation- meeting individual needs • Both refer to the mechanics of inclusion
Promoting Inclusion with your learners • Materials that reflect diversity • In your scheme of work and lesson plan provide activities for different types of learner needs • Watch your language, no stereotyping • Challenge inappropriate conversations • Ensure learners feel a sense of belonging: feeling respected, and valued for who you they are
