What is legislation and codes of practice? • Legislative requirement: A duty to act according to the law as defined in an Act of Parliament and usually enforceable through the courts • Code of Practice: A set of rules outlining how a person in a particular profession or situation is expected to behave • Statutory code of practice: A Code of Practice approved by Parliament and admissible as evidence in any legal action

  3. Legislation Examples • Data Protection Act 1998 • Disability Discrimination Act 1995 • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 • Children Act 2004 • Employment Rights Act 1996 • Environment Protection Act 1990 • Race Relations Act

The Equality Act 2010 Unifies previously piecemeal legislation and protects people from discrimination involving:- • Race (including ethnic or national origins, colour and nationality) • Sex /Sexual orientation • Disability • Religion or belief (including lack of belief) • Gender reassignment (transsexual) • Pregnancy and maternity • Marriage and civil partnership • Age

  5. What do we mean • Inclusion – at a teaching level each facilitator has a responsibility to ensure everyone in the class is included • Differentiation- meeting individual needs • Both refer to the mechanics of inclusion

Promoting Inclusion with your learners • Materials that reflect diversity • In your scheme of work and lesson plan provide activities for different types of learner needs • Watch your language, no stereotyping • Challenge inappropriate conversations • Ensure learners feel a sense of belonging: feeling respected, and valued for who you they are

Points of Referral- Know your boundaries • Careers service / advice and guidance • Learning mentors / teaching assistants / functional skills • Pastoral support • Medical services • Job centre • Next Steps • UK Border agencies • Line Manager / SOVA • CAB – Financial support • Childline / Samaritans
