  2. Knights: Warriors on Horseback • 1. Leather saddles and stirrups changed the way of warfare was conducted in the 700s. • 2. Frankish Knights could knock over enemy foot soldiers and riders on horseback. • 3. Gradually, Knights became the most important part of an Army.

  3. Code of Chivalry • Knights were expected to display courage in battle and loyalty to their lord. • By 1000s, a code of chivalry – fight for 3 masters: 1) Heavenly Lord, 2) Feudal Lord, 3) His chosen lady. Also protected the weak and poor.

  4. Knight’s training • 1. At age 7, boy would be become a page. He would be sent off to the castle of another lord develop knightly skills. • 2. At age 14, boy reached the rank of a squire – or a servant of a knight • 3. At age 21 became a full-fledged knight

  5. Tournaments • To train, some knights would fight in mock battles called tournaments • They were fierce, bloody competitions • Winners could demand high ransoms from the losing knights • Trumpets blared and people cheered as they watched the competition

  6. Brutal Warfare • The most brutal of battles were fought at the castles. Castles dominated much of the countryside in western Europe – castle is designed to as a fortress for defense.

  7. The Castle • Stone castles were protected by massive walls and guard towers • Castle was home to the lord, wife, family, knights and servants • Anywhere from several hundred or several THOUSAND could live in the castle depending on its size!

Defending the Castle • The castle was also designed for defense • Attacking armies used different strategies to try and force castle residents to surrender • Defenders of a castle would pour boiling water, hot oil, or molten lead on enemy soldiers • Expert archers on castle roofs would fire deadly bolts that could pierce full armor

  9. Women’s Role in Feudal Society • 1. Women had the burden of being thought of as inferior to men – this was the view of the Church and accepted in feudal society. • 2. Noblewomen: could inherit land from husband, could also send Knights to war upon the Lord’s request. Also protected the castle – fought against attackers while the Lord was away. • 3. Peasant Women: performed labor around the home, fields, bore children and took care of the family. • 4. Peasant girls learned household chores while wealthy daughters were educated by tutors
