  1. Overfishing and By-catching By: Ryan M, Pablo G, Chase P, and Sam T.

  2. Overfishing • When so many fish are caught, that the population cant reproduce enough to replace them. • Caused by Mass Fishingand Commercial Fishing. • We catch three times more fish than we need.

  3. Overfishing Problems • Causes a chain reaction in food web. • Sharks and Whales have shortage of food. • Increased unicellular organisms, causes eutrophication. • This causes a decrease in oxygen in the water.

  4. By-Catching • By-catching is also called by-kill, which is a portion of animals that are caught in a net and then thrown away. • Sometimes the by-catch is greater than the portion of fish or other animals the is meant to catch. Everything in this picture will be thrown away as by-catch, except for the fish they were meaning to catch.

  5. By-Catching Problem • Fishing nets catch nearly everything in their path, a net that is used for catching shrimp can also catch fish, turtles, sharks, and dolphins. • The extra catch, gets tossed back into the ocean either dead or dying. • By-catching decreases the number of sea animals, which also creates a chain reaction in the sea food web. • Fishers worldwide still throw away about 30 percent of the fish they catch.

  6. Ocean Pollution • Pollution is the introduction of harmful things such as plastic and fertilizers, that aren't usually found in a certain ecosystem. • Increased carbon dioxide makes our oceans more acidic. • Animals also get tangled and even strangled by plastic waste. Although you may not see this much garbage on every beach, trash washes up on beaches all over the world. Even in remote islands.

  7. Ocean Pollution Problems • Many of pollutants can collect at the bottom of the ocean and can be consumed by organisms. • These organisms may not be poisoned by one pollutant but they may be poisoned by another. • This can lead to yet another chain reaction in the sea food web. As you can see the craziest things can end up in the ocean, even tires!

  8. Three Things You can do to Prevent Ocean Pollution • 1. Reduce energy use. • 2. Use reusable plastic products. • 3. Use less fertilizer.
