Solids and Liquids

By Ryan Dolinsky and Dave Manion

Properties of solids
Properties of Solids

  • Molecules held close together

  • Intermolecular forces lock molecules in place

  • Not compressible because the atoms have little free space

Crystalline solids
Crystalline Solids

  • Characteristic geometric shape

  • Sharp melting point

  • Physical Properties are different in different directions (Anisotropy)

Amorphous solids
Amorphous Solids

  • No definite geometrical shape

  • Melt over a wide range of temperature

  • Physical Properties are the same in different directions (isotropic)

Summary of solids
Summary of Solids

  • Retain their own shape and volume

  • Virtually incompressible

  • Do not flow

  • Diffusion within a solid occurs extremely slowly

Liquids
Liquids

  • Properties

    • Assumes shape of the portion of the container it occupies

    • Does not expand to fill container

    • Virtually incompressible

    • Flows readily

    • Diffusion within a liquid occurs slowly

Intermolecular attractive forces
Intermolecular Attractive Forces

  • Strong enough to hold molecules close together

    • Causes liquids to be more dense and far less compressible than gases

  • Have a definite volume

  • Attractive forces are not strong enough to prevent molecules from moving pass one another

    • Explains how liquids can be poured and fill containers

Determining states
Determining States

  • Depends on balance between kinetic energies of particles and interparticle energies of Attraction.

    • Kinetic- depends on temp, tend to keep particles apart and moving

    • Interparticle- force drawing particles together
