  1. DISTRELAY Modeling in PowerWorld Simulator Angel Aquino, PhDWECC MVWGJune 25-26, 2014 angel@powerworld.com 217-384-6330 ext. 21

  2. Announcements • Version 18.0 released last month

  3. DISTRELAY Model • DISTRELAY will have the following functionalities to simplify and increase functionality of the distance relay model • Zone Definition / Description • Blinder Definition • Transfer Trip Scheme functionality • A separate model will exist called LOADENCROACHMENT • LOADENCROACHMENT defines the Load Encroachment region which can be used as a type of “blinder” to instruct a relay not to function

  4. Device Specification • DistRelay is assigned to a particular end of a particular Branch (line or transformer) • DeviceEndcorresponds to the bus where the relay is located at. • FarBus corresponds to the end of series of branches that this impedance relay is looking toward. • FarLineis end of series branch and is the branch where a second relay may be placed and used in the different Transfer Trip schemes. • If no FarLinedefined then FarLinewill be the branch to which the relay is assigned and FarBuswill be the terminal opposite of DeviceEnd

  5. What to Trip • Trip1, Trip2, Trip3, Trip4, Trip5 (Also a bus with each) • List of up to 5 separate branches are specified. • List a terminal bus with each branch too. • If specified only that end of the line will be opened. • If unspecified, we’ll just open both ends of the branch • NumDirect: defines which are considered a direct trip • Example: • A = Trip1; B = Trip2; C = Trip3; D = Trip4 • Number of Direct = 2 • This means that A and B are opened for a “Direct Trip” and C and D are opened for a “Transfer Trip” FarLine Branch A C B D DeviceEnd FarBus

  6. Zone Shapes • There are 3 zones. Each zone is described by 8 parameters • Shape Definitions (6 parameters) • Zone Shape: integer 0, 1, 2, or 3 • 0 = circle, lens, or tomato • 1 = rectangle • 2 = reactance distance • 3 = impedance distance • Angle : Angle • Wt: Total Width (Primary Ohms) • Rr: Reverse Reach (Primary Ohms) • InternalAngle : (Degrees: used with Shape = 0) • Rb (Primary Ohms: Only used with Shape = 1) • Time: seconds the apparent impedance must remain in zone for the zone to return TRUE • Ithres: A current threshold in single line current specified in amps.

  7. DISTRELAY Zone Shapes • 4 separate blinders are available and act to block all zones.

  8. Transfer Trip Scheme • TransferType: Integer Parameter specifying hard-coded logic on transfer trip. • All relays will operate for Zone 1 logic • For transfer trip to work, you MUST have one DISTRELAY assigned to the from bus and a second DISTRELAY assigned the other side • Tripping logic then operates on the two relay’s zones DistRelayB DistRelayA

  9. Transfer Trip Scheme • Trip Logic for DistRelayA • 1 = DUTT: ZA1 • 2 = POTT: ZA2 and ZB2 • 3 = PUTT: ZA2 and ZB1 • 4 = DCB: ZA1 and [ZA2 and (not ZB3)] DistRelayA DistRelayB ZA1 ZB1 ZB3 ZA3 ZB2 ZA2

  10. DISTRELAY Input Data

  11. DIFFRLYS Model • ASPECIFIC current differential relay model to detect a fault that sits within the zone of protection • During a dynamic simulation, the fault is applied by the user of the software so detection of the fault is not necessary which simplifies the model. • DIFFRLYScan be applied to specific branch(es) (lines and transformers) defined by the bus numbers. • The branch/es are opened accordingly with the correct timings (taken into account breaker opening times / communication delay/ detection delay) without any additional user input.

  12. DIFFRLYS Model Specific Cases

  13. DIFFRLYS Model in PowerWorld • PowerWorld will read the specified data as proposed: • Will also let the user specified up to N branches in which the relay will operate • Will write-out the data of the model as specified. • The only configurations that will be allowed are the presented in the previous slides • Ex: Branch7 Branch6 Branch4 Branch5 Branch1 Branch2 Branch3 Branch8

  14. DIFFRLYS Model in PowerWorld Branches and Buses

  15. DIFFRLYG Model • AGENERIC current differential relay model to detect a fault that sits within the zone of protection • DIFFRLYG can be applied to a set of branches (lines or transformers) that belong to a zone / area / kV range / owner. • DIFFRLYG will have the following priority when multiple area / zone / owners need to be entered but have separate timings: Priority List (from Highest to Lowest): • Area(Flag1) / Zone(Flag2) / Owner(Flag3) all specified • Zone(Flag2) / Owner(Flag3) specified • Area(Flag1) / Owner(Flag3) specified • Area(Flag1) / Zone(Flag2) specified • Owner(Flag3) specified • Zone (Flag2) specified • Area (Flag1) specified

  16. DIFFRLYG Model • Model Parameters:

  17. DIFFRLYG Model • Will be applied to the System, similar to the load models: • Ex. WSCC Load Characteristic load Model Area, Zones and Owners System-Specific relay models
