  • A.D. 980 – Viking Erik the Red sailed to Greenland.
  • A.D. 1000 – Erik’s son Leif landed on modern-day Newfoundland.

1497 – John Cabot claims area for England.

1600s – French show up and claim same area.

  • Both countries interested in the fishing/fur trade.

The countries fought for the land in the French and Indian War (1754-1763).

Canada became divided:

  • Roman Catholic French
  • Protestant English

1791 – British government split Canada into two provinces (Upper/Lower).

This did not end conflict……

  • It had self-government but still part of British Empire.
  • 1871 - Canada stretched from Atlantic to Pacific.
  • 1931 – Formal ‘Partnership’

  • Less than a decade later, gold found in Yukon Territory.
  • Gold and other minerals led to more railroads and towns.

  • The majority party’s leader in Parliament becomes the prime minister – or head of the government.
