  1. Surgical Robotics The wave of the future By: Jasper Forest

  2. Surgical Robotics What is a robot? What can they add to the medical field?

  3. History

  4. Advantages Remote surgery, minimally invasive surgery, unmanned surgery. More precision, smaller incisions, decreased blood loss, less pain, quicker heal time. Reduced duration of hospital stays, transfusions and use of pain medication. Better control over surgical instruments.

  5. Advantages Better control over surgical instruments Better view of surgical site. Surgeons no longer have to stand throughout the surgery and will not fatigue as quickly. Since they are using a robot different surgeons can rotate in and out during on surgery.

  6. Disadvantages Higher cost and higher upkeep cost for the systems. Additional training for doctors to learn new systems. During training doctors usually take longer to finish operations than usual. Patients may have higher expectations which may cause higher rates of dissatisfaction and regret.
