  1. What do you know about groundwater? SWBAT describe an aquifer and explain how water moves through the soil.

  2. Water Underground Not all surface water ends up in lakes and ponds. Much of the water soaks into the soil, but where exactly does it go? Even though many communities use reservoirs, man-made lakes that provide water, there is still a large population of people that rely on underground wells. Today, we will look at how aquifers, or underground sediment that holds water, form.

  3. What has to happen to water for it to turn into groundwater?

  4. Here is a close-up drawing of soil. What are pores?

  5. Soil is composed of different sized particles. • Different types of soil can hold different amounts of water.

  6. Permeable describes materials that allow water to pass through them while impermeable does not allow water through. • Watch the simulation and consider what type of materials are permeable & impermeable. http://techalive.mtu.edu/meec/module06/Permeability.htm

  7. TEXTBOOK • Use the picture & information on page 626 to define the terms: saturated zone, unsaturated zone, water table.

  8. Describe how you would collect water from an aquifer. Be sure to include vocabulary that identifies which layers are present. http://techalive.mtu.edu/meec/module06/Wells.htm http://techalive.mtu.edu/meec/module06/WellDrilling.htm

  9. How are wells replenished with water? http://techalive.mtu.edu/meec/module06/TheWaterTable.htm Any water that enters the aquifer from the surface is call RECHARGE. Discuss with your partner: • What makes the water table rise and fall?

  10. How is an artesian well different from other wells? http://techalive.mtu.edu/meec/module06/Aquifers.htm

  11. Use the textbook page 627 or the link below to describe/define a spring. http://techalive.mtu.edu/meec/module06/GroundWaterDestinations.htm

  12. http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/earthguide/diagrams/groundwater/index.htmlhttp://earthguide.ucsd.edu/earthguide/diagrams/groundwater/index.html • Quiz your partner on groundwater vocabulary
