  1. Strategic Project Factors • questions to ask • what to do with the answers

  2. The Questions • requirements • involvement • technology • resources • project management • time constraints • project profile • costs/benefits • business risk • project scope • background

  3. Using the Answers • what affect will it have on the project? • what are the possible ways of dealing with it? • what are the advantages/disadvantages of each? • what is my recommendation?

  4. Example Scenario 1 • timescales are very tight • we must get a quick return on the investment • consider phased implementation • consider bought-in solution • make sure the customer sets the priorities in the cost/benefit analysis

  5. Example Scenario 2 • There is a very high risk to the business if the project fails • consider phased implementation • consider deferring implementation until a less risky time • consider parallel running, pilot implementation • involve end users/customers in design, development and testing to minimise surprises

  6. Example Scenario 3 • The technical solution is unclear, or risky • do it some other way • consider bought-in solution • build a prototype before committing to the full development • prepare a low-tech alternative as a fall-back • visit other places that have already done it • involve the technical suppliers in every stage of the project • share the outcome with the suppliers

  7. Getting no answers • how serious is this unknown factor? • how much work will it take to establish an answer? • can I start work with this factor unknown? • the first part of your project may have to focus on establishing an answer • build in a review point when all the answers are in • be prepared (and prepare your sponsors) to stop or cancel the project
