  1. WELCOME TO RUDD MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND You have been working so hard to learn how to read music and now it is time to make beautiful band music. Don’t forget that different instrument play on different clefs and play different notes. Remember different instruments are also in different families. From the following instrument families pick the family that represents your instrument: BRASS WOODWIND PERCUSSION CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! You are about to embark on an incredible journey in band. You are now going to receive your first instrument, put it together, and play your first note. I KNOW YOU’RE READY, SO LET’S BEGIN!

  2. Brass Family Greetings from the brass family! We are so glad that you picked one of the members of our family and we will try our best to play every note correctly. Your task will be to learn how to correctly assemble your instrument and play the notes on the first page of your “Standards of Excellence” band book. First you will need to select the instrument you have chosen. Let’s Begin! Trumpet French Horn Trombone Euphonium/Baritone Tuba

  3. Trumpet Evaluation Way to go you have found your way to your instrument, the Trumpet! First you must lay the trumpet case on the floor so that you can see the label/ brand sticker. Unlock the two hinges on the front side of the case. Pick the trumpet up with your left hand by grasping, with your whole hand, the FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD VALVES. Hold the trumpet up to you so that the FIRST VALVE TUBE, and FIRST FINGER BUTTON are closest to your mouth and the BELL is facing away from you. Take the MOUTHPIECE out of the case with your right hand and insert it into the LEAD PIPE as shown in the picture. You are now ready to play your first notes on the trumpet, so turn in your band book to page one and number one. Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  4. Evaluation FRENCH HORN Way to go you have found your way to your instrument, the French Horn! Place the instrument case on the floor making sure that your are facing the label/ brand sticker of the case. Open the case by unlocking the hinges on the front and side of the case. Using your left hand pick up the horn where the arrow in the picture says, “HERE”. Once the horn is in your lap, put your left pinky finger into the LITTLE FINGER HOOK, and place your other three fingers (excluding your thumb) on the VALVE KEYS with your index finger on the VALVE closest to you. Put your left thumb into the THUMB RING and hold the instrument at the same angle as the picture. Place the TOP of your right hand and place it inside the BELL. Put your hand in there so that it can support the horn. (You will need to ask Mr. Brandenburg for help in this step, please raise your hand and wait for him to walk over.) Once you know where your right hand is going you can take it out and pick up the MOUTPIECE. Place it into the horn as the picture shows. Then place your right hand back into the BELL. You are now ready to play the French Horn, turn in your book to page one where it says “French Horns only” and play number one. Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  5. Evaluation TROMBONE Way to go you have found your way to your instrument, the Trombone! Place the case on the floor making sure that the label/ brand sticker is facing you. Unlock the latches on the front side of the case, and check to see if there is another on either end. With your left hand pick up the BELL portion of the trombone, by grasping the section of the instrument that is marked in the picture with the word “Here”. Hold the BELL portion so that the BELL is facing down to the ground. While still holding the BELL, with your right hand pick up the SLIDE section of the trombone, make sure that the SLIDE is lock into place, if you are not sure if it is lock raise your hand and Mr. Brandenburg will assist you. Once secured, hold the SLIDE so that the WATER RELEASE VALVE is face down to the ground. Connect the SLIDE to the BELL by inserting the SLIDE where you are holding the BELL in the area marked “Here: in the picture. Once inserted turn the knob and tighten until locked into place. Holding the whole trombone with your left hand, pick up the MOUTHPIECE and insert it into the SLIDE as shown in the picture. You are now ready to play, turn in your book to page one and play number one. Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  6. Evaluation EUPHOMIUM AND BARITONE Way to go you have found your way to your instrument, the Euphonium and Baritone! Place your case on the floor making sure that the label/ brand sticker is facing you. Unlock the two latches in the front and the ones on the sides and open the case. With your left hand (Euph.) or right hand (Bari.) pick up the instrument and lay it horizontally across your lap. Make sure to pick up the instrument where there are fingers in the picture. **If you pick up your instrument by any of the places in RED then your instrument will fall on the floor and you will watch instead of play.** Holding the instrument in your lap with the BELL facing right (Euph.) or the BELL facing left (Bari.), pick up your MOUTHPIECE with your right hand and insert it into the instrument the same as the picture. Next hold the instrument with your left hand on the VALVES (Euph.) or your right hand on the VALVES (Bari.) and hug the instrument with your other hand with the BELL pointing to the sky. Now you are ready to play your first note, turn to page one of your band book and play number one. Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  7. Evaluation BBb TUBA Way to go you have found your way to your instrument, the Tuba! Hopefully you are not trying to hold your case, but if you are place you case on the floor making sure that the label/ brand of the case is facing you Unlock the two latches in the front and the ones on the sides and open the case. With your left hand pick up the instrument and lay it horizontally across your lap. Make sure to pick up the instrument where there are fingers in the picture. **If you pick up your instrument by any of the places in RED then your instrument will fall on the floor and you will watch instead of play.** Holding the instrument in your lap with the BELL facing right, pick up your MOUTHPIECE with your right hand and insert it into the MOUTHPIPE the same as the picture. Next hold the instrument with your left hand on the VALVES and hug the instrument with your other hand with the BELL pointing to the sky. Now you are ready to play your first note, turn to page one of your band book and play number one. Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  8. Woodwind Family Greetings from the Woodwind family! We are so glad that you picked one of the members of our family and we will try our best to play every note correctly. Your task will be to learn how to correctly assemble your instrument and play the notes on the first page of your “Standards of Excellence” band book. First we need to get your reed and mouthpiece ready to play. CLICK HERE! *Flutes do not have reed so they must proceed to their instrument page* Now you will need to select the instrument you have chosen. Let’s Begin! Flute Oboe Clarinet Alto Saxophone

  9. Double and SingleREEDS Before you can put you instrument together you must get your reed ready. First take you wooden reed out of its holder and place the thinner end into your mouth, leave it there until the directions say otherwise.* Pick up you black mouthpiece and hold it so that the end that comes to a point is pointing up. Take the reed out of you mouth and place it, with the rounded side facing up, on the open part of the mouthpiece. Make sure that the top of the reed is barely peeking over the top of the mouthpiece, at this point raise your hand and Mr. Brandenburg will come check the status of your reed. Holding the reed in place on the mouthpiece, pick up the metal ligature and place it over the reed and the mouthpiece with the bolts facing you. Tighten the bold gently keeping the reed in place. Set the mouthpiece and reed down, on a clean spot (this will be in your mouth) and proceed. *Oboes and Bassoons are Double Reed and they only need to finish the first two steps! Now you are ready to pick your instrument! CLICK HERE!

  10. Evaluation FLUTE Way to go you have found your way to your instrument, the Flute! First you must lay the case in your lap so that you can see the label/ brand sticker. Unlock the two hinges on the front side of the case and open the case. With you right hand take out the HEAD JOINT. This is the part of the instrument you blow into. Holding the HEAD JOINT in your left hand now, pick up the BODY or MIDDLE JOINT. Gently turn the HEAD JOINT into the body, making sure that the KEYS are aligned with the EMBOUCHURE/BLOW HOLE. You are now holding the HEAD JOINT and MIDDLE JOINT connected in your left hand and your must now pick up the FOOT JOINT. Gently turn the FOOT JOINT into the MIDDLE JOINT and make sure that the bars are lined up. Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  11. Evaluation OBOE Way to go you have found your way to your instrument, the Oboe! First you must lay the case in your lab so that you can see the label/ brand sticker. Unlock the two hinges on the front side of the case. You already have the reed in your mouth, but it not making any sound. With your right hand pick up the oboe with the BELL pointing towards the floor. Holding the KEY very gently. Holding the REED by the STAPLE, gently turn the REED into the oboe, making sure that the REED is lying horizontally facing you. Now turn in your book to page one and play number one Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  12. Evaluation CLARINET Way to go you have found your way to your instrument, the Clarinet! Make sure that your MOUTHPIECE, METAL LIGATURE, AND REED are ready. First you must lay the case in your lab so that you can see the label/ brand sticker. Unlock the two hinges on the front side of the case. With your left hand pick up the UPPER JOINT, gently holding the KEYWORK and TONE HOLES With your right hand pick up the LOWER JOINT, again holding the KEYWORK and TONE HOLES gently Gently turn the UPPER JOINT into the LOWER JOINT paying special attention to the picture to see if you holding the JOINTS correctly Holding the JOINTS in your left hand pick up the BARREL JOINT with your right hand and gently turn it into the JOINTS, then using the same process turn in the BELL Holding the Clarinet in your left hand, pick up your MOUTHPIECE, METAL LIGATURE, and REED and gently turn them into the BARREL JOINT Now turn in your book to page one and play number one Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  13. Evaluation Alto Saxophone Way to go you have found your way to your instrument, the Alto Sax! Make sure that your MOUTHPIECE, METAL LIGATURE, AND REED are ready. Lay the case on the ground so that you can see the label Unlock all the latches in front and on the side of the case Pick up the BODY of the saxophone by the BELL with your left hand Pick up the neck strap accessory, put it around your neck and attach it on the loop on the middle of the underside BODY Pick up the CROOK and attach it to the top of the BODY right above the OCTAVE MECHANISM. Turn the CROOK in gently without pushing. Attach the MOUTHPIECE, METAL LIGATURE, AND REED to the CROOK. You are now ready to play your first notes, turn in your band book to page one and play number one. Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  14. Percussion Family Greetings from the percussion family! We are so glad that you picked one of the members of our family and we will try our best to play every note and rhythm correctly. Your task will be to learn how to correctly set up the instruments in your section and play the notes on the first page of your “Standards of Excellence” band book. You must complete ALL instruments listed below! Let’s Begin! Bells/Glockspiel Snare Drum Bass Drum Triangle, Cymbals, Tympani and Tambourine

  15. Evaluation Bells and Xylophone If the bells or xylophone you are playing are not attached to a stand, get a keyboard stand in the percussion closet and set it up. Carefully pick up the bells or xylophone and set them gently on top of the stand that you tested to see if it was sturdy. Set the bells or xylophone down on the stand with the small bars on your right and the longer bells on your left. You may now turn to page one in your band book, look on the page one that says, “Mallets Only,” and play the ENTIRE PAGE Once you have completed this process and Mr. Brandenburg has approved you may move on to the next instrument.

  16. Evaluation Snare Drum The first step is to set up the snare drum’s stand. Make sure that the legs on the bottom are spread evenly by turning the knob closest to the legs. Using the knob next highest raise the stand to a comfortable height for you to play, which will be at you waist line(not where you pants are) Open the tongs on the top of the stand so they are fully extended Carefully place the snare drum on the tongs with the beads/snares facing the ground Hold the drum stick they way you have been taught prior to this lesson. Open your book to page on, look on the page one that says, “Snare and Bass Drum Only,” and play the ENTIRE page Once you have completed this process and Mr. Brandenburg has approved you may move on to the next instrument.

  17. Evaluation Bass Drum The first step is to set up the Bass Drum stand Open the stand all the way so that the level connects with the furthest screw from the middle. Once you have tested the stand to be steady, you may gently and carefully pick up the bass drum and set it on the stand You should be facing the TENSION SCREWS and SHELL, and the DRUM HEAD will be on your left and right Open your book to page on, look on the page one that says, “Snare and Bass Drum Only,” and play the ENTIRE page Once you have completed this process and Mr. Brandenburg has approved you may move on to the next instrument.

  18. Evaluation Triangle, Tambourine, Cymbals These are all auxiliary percussion instruments and will not be set up However, make sure you can identify all of these instruments! Once Mr. Brandenburg as approved this step CLICK HERE!

  21. Conclusion Today you have begun a great journey into the world of band music! You have learn how to put your instrument together and play your first note. Now you will be able to play your instrument at school, home, church, or wherever you please. You have traveled into a small, small area of what the Internet offers you as band members, and I hope you will continue to find audio and video of band all over the world. Finally we need to put our instruments away by taking them apart using the prior directions but doing everything backwards.
