Sankalp On Wheels aims to provide education to children in Gurgaon's slum settlements by utilizing a customized bus as a classroom and transport service. The bus is equipped with learning tools and will cater to up to 100 children at two sites with a 2-hour class duration.

Objective • Take education to the doorstep of children living in slum settlements in Gurgaon who do not have access to schooling • Provide transportation to children who live in neighbourhoods (construction sites/ slums) who have no public transport or schools nearby
Concept • Sankalp On Wheels is a customised bus which will be used as a classroom which moves • The bus will be equipped with a black board , tv and dvd player, a computer and a book/toy library • The seating capacity for the classroom requirements will be about thirty and that for transport needs about 35
Utilisation of Bus • Pick up and drop service upto a radius of 15 kms of the main schools • Morning (30 to 35 children) • Afternoon (30 to 35 children) • Classrooms at two sites • Morning and afternoon • 75 to 100 children • Class duration of 2 hours

Operating Plan : 2008-09 • Sankalp on Wheels – 1 • Slum settlement in Sector 56 comprising more than 500 families • School will run on weekdays from 9 am to 12 noon • A group of 30 to 40 children will be hand picked to be the first batch • Syllabus will be based on the total literacy campaign
Operating Plan: 2008-09 • Pick up and drop • Bus will be used to transport children to and from School 1 and 2 • Transportation will be provided to children in pre identified jhuggi clusters which is about 5-7 kms away from the schools
Project Status • The bus has been purchased and modifications done • The total expenditure on the bus till date has been Rs 8.25 lacs which includes the cost of the bus, fabrication, accessories and insurance • The team is in the process of being hired • a volunteer has been identified to co-ordinate the project
Project Status • The Sankalp on Wheels team will start visiting the identified jhuggi from August 15 onwards and informal classes will commence • The project will be formally launched as soon as the bus is registered • Necessary applications have been made to the State Controller of Transport and approvals are expected in the next 4-6 weeks
