  3. Why are Tardies a Problem? • 1. Being on time is valued and expected in our community and society as a whole. Helping student to be on time helps them learn an important life skill. • 2. Students miss instructional time and can fall behind. • 3. When a student walks in late it is disruptive to the educational environment. All heads turn and oftentimes the teacher has to stop his/her instruction to help the late student. • 4. All other students in the class lose valuable instructional time when the teacher has to help the late student. • 5. Poor lifelong habits can be formed which can be detrimental to the success of the student/adult in the work place. • 6. Grades can be negatively affected. • 7. It is rude to the teacher and classmates and generally poor manners. Oftentimes the behavior is selfish and a self-centered act.

Why are you Tardy? • Are you disorganized in the morning? • Do you tend to want to talk one more minute with friends in the morning before school? • Do you underestimate how long it takes to come to school? • Are you angry and displaying passive-aggressive behavior? • Are you late because others in your family are late? • Are you late because your carpool is late?

  6. Take Responsibility for Your Sleep Schedule • Go to bed on time. Most children, teens and young adults need at least 8-10 hours sleep; if you don't get enough, it will be difficult to be alert in the morning. • Get an alarm clock. • Take responsibility for your sleep schedule. • How long does it typically take you to get prepared, and/or travel to school? Just because it once took you 10 minutes to get ready for school one time, doesn't mean that's how long it usually really takes. Over a week, time how long it takes to get ready for school, or bike to class, or whatever. This will give you a more realistic time frame and then leave five to ten minutes earlier to allow plenty of time. • Still not making it to school on time? • GET UP EARLIER, LEAVE EARLIER!

  7. Plan the Night Before • Figure out what you need, and have a place for everything. • Know where everything is. • Get everything in your backpack the night before. Get your clothes out the night before. • Make your lunch the night before. • You won't lose time in the morning if you do everything the night before.

  8. Strategies to Mitigate Tardies • Problem solve with your child, get to the root problem; • Praise your child when they are on time. Utilize positive "speak" with children, "I like it when..." • Offer incentives; • After educating the student, have the student observe tardy behavior and then reflect by writing or communicating the adverse affects of tardies; • Progressive discipline at home; • Take privileges away (going out, playing, cell phones, computers, t.v. time, etc.

  9. Tardies are Tardies • There are no differences between excused tardies and unexcused tardies. No matter what label you put on it, tardies are disruptive and destructive.

  10. It’s the Law! • In California, a student is truant if he/she is absent or tardy by more than 30 minutes without a valid excuse on 3 occasions in a school year.

Parent Resources PROJECT SUCCESS - SUPPORTING SECONDARY STUDENTS IN GRADES 7-12 Project Success is a free, grant-funded program provided by IUSD’s Guidance Resources to encourage the development of resiliency skills in young adolescents. Parent Resources GUIDANCE ASSISTANT PROGRAM SUPPORTING ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN GRADES K-6 It is very common for some young children to have trouble with adjusting to the classroom, getting along with others, managing their feelings, dealing with changes in their families, paying attention, regulating their behavior, and developing the social and emotional skills they need for school and life success. The IUSD Elementary Guidance Assistant Program is designed to offer support to these students utilizing the Second Step curriculum. Students with parent permission may participate in a series of once-a-week, 30-45 minute small group or individual sessions for 10-12 weeks. The small groups meet during the school day to increase positive behaviors and learning-readiness. Sometimes, social skills lessons are offered to the whole classroom as well, in a series of 8-10, 30 minute “workshops”.
