  1. Sarah Nixon’s12th Boston Marathon Run for the

  2. After my first Boston Marathon “bandit” run in 1995 with Sagamore Beach neighbor and “official” runner, Dave Mattaliano. He graciously allowed me to borrow his medal for the picture!

  3. Why I run for DFMC I ran my first Boston Marathon starting at the back of the pack with the other “bandit” runners in 1995. Running my first marathon was exciting, but I was even more impressed with the charity runners who combined the personal fitness goal of training for a marathon with a commitment to helping others. A week after that first marathon, I put in a call to the DFMC office in hopes of joining an amazing group of people supporting an amazingmedical institution.

  4. More about Dana-Farber Cancer Institute • “Dedicated to Discovery…Committed to Care” • Ranked by the National Cancer Institute as “one of the premier cancer centers in the world” • Institute’s staff of roughly 2,000 is made up of many of the world’s brightest medical and scientific minds. • The Institute has helped to make it possible for more than 50 percent of all people with cancer to be cured, and for two out of every three children with cancer to be cured • There is STILL more work to be done in the fight against cancer!

  5. DFMC supports theClaudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research • 100% of the proceeds of DFMC support the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research which was established in 1987 by Delores Barr Weaver and J. Wayne Weaver in memory of Mrs. Weaver’s mother. • Since the Program’s inception, nearly 100 Barr Investigators have been designated to conduct important studies that hold the promise of achieving major breakthroughs in understanding, overcoming and eventually eliminating cancer. Claudia Adams Barr

  6. History of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge • Inspired by Michael Silverstein, then a Harvard freshman, who ran in memory of his friend, Seth, a brain tumor victim • “Mike’s Run” caught the attention of Wayne and Delores Weaver as a means to involve many people in the crusade against cancer • First DFMC team was organized in 1990 1990 DFMC stats: 19 runners $100,000 raised for cancer research

  7. I was one of 40,000 runners who completed the 100th Boston Marathon in 1996. This was my first of many marathons on the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Team. 1996 DFMC stats: 400 runners 1.3 million raised for research

  8. 12 years with DFMC!! Running for DFMC has been one of the more powerful and rewarding experiences of my life. I have had the opportunity to meet wonderful runners, volunteers, doctors, patients and their families over the years as we “train” through both the good and the bad times.

  9. Warm training run in Jacksonville, FL Freezing training run on Martha’s Vineyard in February!

  10. The people for whom I run:

  11. My patient partner, Denille Fedor • Denille was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 9. I was first paired with her when she was 11. • Denille and I, and our families, shared a handful of years together celebrating the DFMC accomplishments. • Denille moved on from the patient partner experience in highschool. It was time for her to have fun as a healthy teenager!! • Denille recently celebrated her 22nd birthday!!

  12. Elizabeth Poirier • My mother-in law has struggled with a variety of cancers over the years. Friends and family continue to be amazed at her strength, stamina and positive outlook. • Elizabeth will celebrate her 66th birthday in May.

  13. In Memory Stetson Laronde was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks before his 7th birthday. This brave little boy and his family faced this awful disease with courage, hope and lots of love. Sadly, Stetson lost his battle. I have the honor of running in Stetson’s memory as well as sharing time with Stetson’s family who remind me that love endures all!

  14. Creative Fundraising Caps for a Cure An elite team of knitting athletes fighting cancer with stitches I’ll run the miles; They knit the hats!!

  15. Yoga Fundraiser Barry Chait and I co-hosted an event that stretched both mind and body to raise funds for DFMC. Namaste! My plan is to cross the finish line in this pose – NOT!

  16. How to support my 2007 DFMC Boston Marathon Run • Send along a check (made payable to Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge) and mail to me in enclosed self-addressed envelope • Make an on-line donation at www.dfmarathon.kintera.org • Buy a Caps for a Cure at Graceful Stitches (Medfield) or Wellesley Booksmith • Come cheer ALL DFMC runners along the course on Marathon Monday!!

  17. 2006 DFMC Stats: 554 runners 4.17 million raised for research My 2007 personal goal is $10,000 Our 2007 DFMC team goal is 4.25 million!!! Together we can make our dreams come true! 2006 Boston Marathon 3:03
