  3. IELTS SCORE IELTS = 6.0 Officially before 1 May 2011, see PFM manual • If IELTS ≥ 6: You need to do the whole programme for admission to the Netherlands. • If IELTS ≠ 6 (or more) in time: you do NOT have to do assignment 4.1 (UBM) + 4.2 (placement), but you can do them next year.

  4. Assignment 4: A Chinese organization Objectives: Getting insight into the business activities of an organisation in the field of IHM Report writing Interviewing Networking and finding a company to do a 2 weeks placement!!

  5. Assignment 4: Learning methods: • Group work for report (in pairs) • Individual: CV, application letter • Networking: company visit(s) / interview(s) • Lectures Study load: 20 hours (each individual) Topics: UBM-model, IHM companies 5

Assignment 4: Context • All organisations: basic aspects are the same • You must be able to make a quick scan of any IHM organisation that could be your future employer. • Your tool for this quick analysis = the Universal Business Model (UBM). UBM = way to understand any organisation /company. 6

  7. Assignment 4: What? (1) Together with an IHM classmate you choose a IHM company or organisation. Try to find a company or organisation that has a website where they not only present what they offer as products / services but also who they are. 7

  8. Assignment 4: What? (2) • Describe your organisation according to UBM. • In your assignment you need to describe 6 out of the 10 UBM aspects: • IDENTITY, • PURPOSE, • STRUCTURE, • PARTICIPANTS • ACTIVITIES and • DELIVERABLES. 8

  9. Assignment 4: What? (3) • First: Desk research about your company • Second: Have an interview with the organisation. • During interview also ask about if the organisation is willing to cooperate with students of CAU. For example: - summer placements, - possibilities for final thesis, - excursions, - guest lecturers. Ask them what they expect from students who want to do a summer placement with them! 9

  10. Assignment 4: Approach (1) Study the UBM model. See the information of this lecture and www.howarddowding.com. Choose company/organization (in pairs) and get approval Collect information through the internet, brochures and other sources Focus on the 6 aspects identity, purpose, structure, participants, activities and deliverables Make a start with your report Present the information in one chapter per aspect. Use paragraphs for the underlying elements.

  11. Assignment 4: Approach (2) Organise a meeting/interview with the manager of the organisation, after!!! your desk search. Prepare yourself well! What do you need to know to complete the UBM? Make a check-list. Refine the check-list, based on who you’ll meet. Do the visit and interview. Use the information of the interview to complete the UBM. For all information in your report make clear where you got it from (company website, interview, flyer, other organization, you saw it yourself etc.).

  12. Assignment 4: Approach (3) Still information gaps? If yes: do your very best to add to the report what’s still missing. E.g. call the company etc. If it’s really impossible to get the information, write in your report which information is missing and why. Report on the possible cooperation (placement+ thesis possibilities, excursions and guest lectures) between the organisation and CAU (students) in a separate chapter. 12

  13. Assign. 4: Professional situation Now: You do a UBM quick scan for a company or organisation. Later: Keep in mind that in the (near) future this organisation might be your: • provider of a placement • provider of your thesis assignment • employer • business partner • etc.! 13

UBM report (as a pair), includes: • Introduction: • Why did you choose this company? • How did you get the information (interview, internet, books, observation, inquiry)? • UBM information about the 6 aspects and the underlying elements. Keep it to the point. • A chapter about the possibilities of cooperation between the company and CAU, and the conditions before it can offer a summer placement to a student

  15. Assignment 4.1: Product (2) 2. An application letter for a summer placement of 2 weeks in China (individually). This includes: • An introduction of yourself and your university and major (use assignment 1) • Why you are interested in a summer placement in that organisation and what you would like to learn • When the placement has to take place and under which conditions • Ask if the company is prepared to make an appointment with you to discuss further details about the placement • A separate CV with details of your education and work experience (More explanation CV and letter later)

  24. Contents CV - individual • Contact information • Personal information • Optional: personality. Keep it factual, and avoid words like "enthusiastic", "highly motivated", etc. • Optional: key skills / professional assets • Working experience • Education and training • Optional: Professional qualifications, publications • Optional: Drivers license, hobbies etc. Maximum = 1 page!! (later in your career 2 pages)

  25. Contact information • Name: First name, surname / family name, English name • Home address • E-mail address • Phone number • Picture is allowed in a modern CV

  26. Personal information • Date of Birth • Place and country of Birth • Citizenship • Optional: gender, if not clear from the name • Optional: Marital status, spouses name, number of children etc.

  27. Working experience • A reverse chronological list of the jobs you have done, starting with current job (if you have one!). • Include position details and dates • Here you can put your placement experiences.

  28. Education and training • A reverse chronological list of the education and training you have done or are still doing. So start with CAU, and then your high school etc. • Include dates, and some details

  29. CV general The CV should make clear immediately what is important about you for the company you are writing to. Therefore: • Keep your CV brief • Make good use of your layout/ structure

Personal Portfolio for selection interview • Put all documents in a personal portfolio for the selection interview in May 2010 • In your personal portfolio put all your information (individual and group reports, presentations and feedback) • Keep a well maintained and up-to-date system of filing!
