  2. Christianity To Northern Europe • Roman Empire Has Fallen • Groups from north and east are moving into these areas • Groups created their own states. • The Rulers of these States called themselves Kings

  3. Christianity to Northern Europe • These groups creating states created what is known as the Middle Ages (500-1500 yrs.) • Another name for Middle Ages is Medieval • The states created were not of the religion Christianity. • Monks and Missionaries spread Christianity

  4. Missionaries • Missionaries- people who try to convert others to a particular religion • The Pope- Most powerful force that helped spread Christianity into Northern Europe • Responsible for sending the missionaries to northern Europe • Patrick- one of the first missionaries to travel to Northern Europe by himself

  5. Monks • Monks- religious men who lived apart from society in isolated communities. • Monks lived in what are known as Monasteries

  6. Franks Build an Empire • Charlemagne- was the powerful leader of the Franks • Franks were one of the strongest kingdoms in Europe • A great administrator of school • In his schools he had some of the greatest religious scholars and teachers of the middle ages.

  7. Invaders Threaten Europe • Vikings- from Iceland also known as Scandinavia raided Great Britain
