  1. P PHET LAB – Geometric Optics STARTER The lens shown here is called a Negative Meniscus Positive meniscus Plano-Convex Plano-Concave

  2. PHET LAB – Geometric Optics Open “ Geometric Optics” in the Phet simulations on line. Choose: Principle Rays, Curvature radius = .60m, Refractive Index = 1.6, Diameter = .80m, Check “virtual image” and check “ruler”. Calculate the focal length of the lens using the lens maker’s equation. f= ___________________cm ( show all work) B. Measure the marked focal points with the ruler and record. f = __________________cm

  3. Image and Object Distances Place the object 80cm from the lens. ( do = 80cm ). 1. Measure the distance of the image from the lens. di = ___________ 2. Is the image upright or inverted? __________________ 3. Is the image enlarged or reduced? __________________ 4. Is the image real ( on the right of the lens) or virtual ( on the left of the lens)? _________________

  4. Image and Object Distances D. Place the object 30cm from the lens. ( do = 30cm ). 1. Measure the distance of the image from the lens. di = ___________ 2. Is the image upright or inverted? __________________ 3. Is the image enlarged or reduced? __________________ 4. Is the image real ( on the right of the lens) or virtual ( on the left of the lens)? ___________________

  5. Images E. Place the object on the focal point on the left side of the lens. Describe what happens. Write a summary on the back of this sheet that describes the images for do >f , do<f, and do = f. Describe each as real or virtual, inverted or upright, and enlarged or reduced.
