  2. Geometric Shapes

  3. Quadrilaterals A quadrilateral is a polygon with 4 sides.

  4. Quadrilaterals Square Rectangle Rhombus Kite, Dart Trapezoid Parallelogram Trapezium

  5. Square • A square is a regular quadrilateral. • All angles are equal (90°). • All sides are of equal length. • Opposite sides are parallel. • The diagonals bisect each other at 90°. • The diagonals are equal in length.

  6. Rectangles • All angles are equal (90°). • Opposite sides are of equal length. • The diagonals are equal in length.

  7. Paralleogram • Diagonally opposite angles are equal. • sides are of equal length. • Opposite sides are parallel. • The diagonals bisect each other.

  8. Rhombus • Diagonally opposite angles are equal. • All sides are of equal lengths. • Opposite sides are parallel. • The diagonals bisect each other at 90°.

  9. Kite • Two pairs of sides are of equal length. • One pair of diagonally opposite angles is equal. • Only one diagonal is bisected by the other. • The diagonals cross at 90°.

  10. Trapezium (US) Trapezium (US) is a quadrilateral with NO parallel sides. Trapezoid (US) has a pair of opposite sides parallel.

  12. Scalene triangle • 3 different length sides • 3 different sized angles • typically used in setting triangles • easier to paper piece • no lines of symmetry – cannot accidentally flip the block over to fix a mistake • can be a right triangle (one angle = 90 degrees) • typical triangle found in math class 30, 60, 90 • can be called half rectangle triangles in quilting

  13. Scalene triangle • Found in: • tilted blocks (as setting triangles) • wonky blocks • mariner’s compass blocks • palm blocks • birds of paradise blocks

  14. Equilateral Triangles • 3 sides equal length • 3 equally sized angles • least commonly found in quilting • 6 triangles can make a hexagon block • all angles are 60 degrees - no exceptions • 3 angles of symmetry, flip around any angle • guaranteed to have 2 sides of bias edges

  15. Equilateral Triangles • Found in: • thousand pyramid blocks • chevron designs • strip pieced hexagons • tumbling blocks • bordered thousand pyramid blocks

  16. Isosceles Triangles • 2 equal length sides • 2 equally sized angles • most commonly found in quilting • Half Square Triangle – HST • Quarter Square Triangle – QST • one line of symmetry, flip around the ‘odd’ angle • can be a right triangle (HST, QST, flying geese) • triangle with an acute ‘odd angle’ – kaleidoscope block

  17. Isosceles Triangles • Found in: • pinwheel • broken dishes • flying geese • hourglass • spool • maple leaf • kalidescope

  18. Obtuse Triangles • Obtuse triangles have one obtuse angle • (an angle greater than 90). • The other 2 angles are acute (less that 90). Acute Triangles • Acute triangles have all angles acute.
