Elimination of small schools • Review: • Achievement data • Staff survey • Parent survey • Small schools intention was to be a structure for supporting mission and vision (inception 2004) Pathways and PASSAGE • What we found: • True “small schools:” Costly and difficult to maintain “purity” • Problematic with scheduling; programs compete; students’ courses and extracurricular choices affected • Resulted in majority of courses having mix of students from more than one school

  4. Academic Achievement: • OGT scores remained stagnant or declined from 2004-2012 • Decrease in Performance Index • Decrease in percentage of indicators

  5. Surveys Parents: • 141 responses • Many positive remarks about relationships, academic choices, personalization, choices • Dissatisfaction about not getting first choice of courses or school Staff: • 64 responses • Felt not enough progress was made around relationships, college/career readiness • Concerns that small schools didn’t prepare students for tests • Overwhelming response stated that small schools are confusing and create some sense of inequity among schools • Teachers felt there weren’t enough resources provided

  6. RESULT After 10 years of trying, the small school structure is not getting the results we need for our students.

  7. Projected Timelines • 2014-2015 small schools continue (planning year) • 2015-2017 one high school in swing space • 2017-2018 one high school in new school

The Future of Heights High (2-3 years) • While at Wiley swing space: • Focus on teaching and learning • Improve instructional practices • Focus on ensuring a safe and secure school with an emphasis on instruction • Preserve successful high school tenets: • Technology and blended learning • Partnerships with universities • Career and Technical Education • Advanced Placement Courses • Arts and athletics • Explore instructional programs for 2017-2018

Looking ahead 3-5 years: The Future of Heights High • One high school • Preservation of instructional practices that work • Wide array of options for students • Innovative • Preservation of relationships • College and career readiness • Problem and inquiry-based learning (project labs; mini auditorium) • Opportunities for students (post-secondary, CTE, Arts, etc.)

Planning and programming: • Teacher and staff input • Community, staff and student sessions • Building visits • Preservation of strategies “that work” • Great opportunities for innovation; refashion the high school • Learn from our experience planning for small schools; be successful in our planning

  11. Next Steps • Gather input • Visit buildings/explore models and programs • Planning document • Planning meetings • Next 10 months…opportunity to launch CH-UH HS dedicated to helping every student achieve • Capitalize on strengths as we design the new Heights High
