  1. 1)Objective: I will learn about mixtures and solutions. 2) Essential Question: What are mixtures and solutions? 3) Warm-up:What is the best way to determine if an object is made of pure silver? 4) Vocabulary: Mixtures, solutions, homogenous, heterogenous

  2. 1) Mixture=Two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined 2) Solution= a mixture that forms when substance dissolves another 3) homogenous= a mixture that is the same throughout 4) heterogenous= A mixture that is not the same throughout

  5. Vocabulary quiz review

  6. Vocabulary Quiz Corrections- Earn five points back for each correction. If you made a 0, correct all 12 and you can improve your grade to a 60.

  7. Unit Test 1- Friday

  8. Lab Zone Discover p. 536

  9. Read p. 536-544. Take Heading Notes as you read

  10. Example of Heading Notes p. 537 Properties of Matter Main idea Paragraph 1: Chemistry is the study of matter and how it changes Main idea Paragraph 2: The properties and changes of matter depend on its makeup Main idea Paragraph 3: Every form of matter has either chemical or physical properties p. 540 Elements Main idea Paragraph 1: all matter is made up of elements.

  11. 1)Objective: I will learn about the role catalysts and inhibitors play in a chemical reaction. 2) Essential Question: How does increasing or decreasing the activation energy affect the rate in which a chemical reaction takes place. 3) Warm-up: Is water a compound or an element? 4) Vocabulary: activation energy, catalyst, inhibitor

  12. Activation Energy= the minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction. catalyst= a material that increases the rate of a reaction by lowering the activation energy inhibitor= a material used to decrease the rate of a reaction

  17. Reviewing Chemical Reactions

  18. Labzone Build Inquiry Fill one plastic cup with cold tap water and the other plastic cup with hot tap water Predict whether or not the antacid tablet will react faster in hot water or cold water Test your hypothesis How did the two reactions occur.?

  19. Notes on Controlling Chemical Reactions How does temperature affect a chemical reaction? Answer: higher temperatures provide the activation energy needed for a chemical reaction to occur. 2) What does concentration mean? Answer: The Amount of a Substance in a Given Volume 3) How might our normal body temperature be related to our dependence on catalysts? Answer: Our body temperature is too low for many chemical reactions to take place without the help of catalysts.

  20. Read p. 558-559

  21. Answer the You Decide questions on p. 559

  22. 1)Objective: I will learn about the problem hazardous chemicals can cause if not transported safely. 2) Essential Question: How can I use the qualities of good citizenship to find a solution to the problem of hazardous chemicals being transported unsafely? 3) Warm-up: Identify two ways non-metals are different than metals. 4) Vocabulary: open system, closed system

  23. Open system=A system in which matter can escape from or enter into the surroundings. Closed system= a system in which no matter is allowed to enter or leave

  27. Read p. 646-647

  28. Read p. 558-559

  29. Everyday hazardous chemicals get into the atmosphere of inhabited communities and cause harm to many. You are so fed up but also determined that there must be a way to solve this problem. In Groups, Create a Political Action Committee lobbying for the government to place new regulations on the unsafe transporting of hazardous chemicals.

  30. Steps for creating Your Political Action Committee Name your political action committee. Identify solutions you will seek to fix the problem of unsafely transporting hazardous chemicals 3) Create a protest that would catch the attention of the government. 4) You must have a logo for your political action committee and it must be illustrated. Create a catchy “propaganda” slogan to attract attention to your efforts Prepare to present before the class.

  33. 1)Objective: I will review the key concepts I need to know for the Unit 1 Test o n Matter and Chemistry. 2) Essential Question: What concepts of matter and chemistry do I need to study more in order to do well on unit test 1. 3) Warm-up: How can one tell whether or not a chemical equation is balanced? 4) Vocabulary: individual exposure, individual susceptibility, mutagen

  34. Individual exposure= the amount of exposure one has to a harmful chemical Individual susceptibility= the chance one has of being affected by a particular toxic chemical mutagen= anything that changes the DNA of an organism.

  47. What information did Mendeleev use to find a pattern in the elements? When did Mendeleev notice a pattern? Why was Mendeleev able to predict the properties of elements that had not yet been discovered? What information about an element is given in each square of the periodic table?

  48. 5) From the information in each square, what do you know about the structure of the element? 6) What are the rows of the periodic table called? 7) How do the properties of the metals in a period change from left to right? 8) What are the columns in the periodic table called?
