  3. Thursday, Dec 22, 2011 • Quiet Question: Type Two Prompt---Working with a partner, you will analyze a historical political cartoon that is assigned to you. You should use your notes from the previous lesson , your textbook pages , and THE POLITICAL CARTOON STRATEGIES PINK PACKET. (We will be using this Pink Packet all year when we work with political cartoons.) • Historical Cartoons: • “The Roman Aristocrat”---National Assembly • “The Tables Were Turned”---National Assembly • “Mea Culpa Of The Pope”---National Assembly • “The Family Of Pigs Is Brought Back To The Pigsty”---Legislative Assembly • “A Family of Sans-Culottes Refreshing After The Fatigue Of The Day”---Legislative Assembly • “Promised Horrors Of The French Invasion”---Legislative Assembly • Events To Consider---Which is your political cartoon addressing?: • Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen • Constitution of 1791 • Civil Constitution of the Clergy • Royal Family’s Flight to Varennes • September Massacres • Declaring War on Austria and Belgium • Political Cartoon Analysis Sheet Based Upon the National Archives and NCTE---Read, Write, and Think Program

Consider the historical content, the tone, the political cartoon strategies used, and the message. Below, identify the following: • Similarities Differences • What are your group’s predictions for what will happen next in the French Revolution and why?

Thursday, Dec 22, 2011 • Class: Ms. Barben is going to read aloud the “History Makers: Maximilien Robespierre Master and Victim of the Terror”, and as she reads aloud highlight key points from the biography. • Individual: Type Two Prompt--- Now answer the following Reflection Questions on the biography. Think back to Oliver Cromwell in England, Louis XIV in France, and Catherine the Great in Russia to help with this. • What about Robespierre might have appealed to others? Who and why? • Why did Robespierre eliminate the Hebertists and the Indulgents? Explain. • How did Robespierre’s methods turn against him? Explain. • Class: Share responses to Reflection Questions. • We will then watch, the short You Tube Clip or United Streaming Clip depending on whether You Tube is working, on the Reign of Terror. As we watch, take notes in the provided Five Ws and How graphic organizer.

You are to going to do the Interactive Notebook Method in response to the provided teacher notes. • You must use a minimum of THREE different methods on the Left Side. • You must do BOTH SIDES on each page. There are to be no gaps. • Homework: Reading and Talking to the Text. Due on Thursday , Jan 5, 2012 at the end of the class period.

Thursday, January 5, 2012 • Groups: You will be creating a Sensory Figure for a citizen living in France during the Reign of Terror. • You will use the following resources: Interactive Notes, Supplemental Reading, and pages 585-592 in your textbook. • You will have 40 minutes to complete this on the poster boards. • The remaining minutes of class will be spent having groups present to each other as review. • You must address the following aspects: • Political Parties and Purges of the Girondins by the Jacobins • Trials and Executions of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette • Robespierre and the Virtue of Terror • Levee en Masse and War • Dechristianization, Temple of Reason, and New Calendar • Music and National Anthem • Fashion and Name Changes • Vendee Revolt • Committee of Public Safety and Watch Committees • Guillotine and Executions
