  3. Causes of the reign of Terror • Civil War in France was a cause of the Terror • Foreign War was also a cause • Counterrevolutionaries were a cause because they were a threat to the revolution and needed to be dealt with

  4. About the Committee of Public Safety • The committee was established April 6, 1973 • It was made to defend France against all enemies or threats • Also made to watch over members of the executive government • Maximilen Robespierre was a very important member of the committee

  5. What the committee did • They practiced dictator like control over the government of France • Destroyed its enemies to the left which were the Hebertists • Destroyed its enemies to the right of France which were the Indulgents

  6. Maximilian Robespierre • Very important member of the committee of public safety • Was born on May 6,1958 in France • Maximilien was beheaded in 1794 by the people of France • He had the nickname of the “Incorruptible”

  7. The Guillotine • Also called the “International Razor” or “Madame Guillotine” • Used to execute people by chopping off their head • Created by Dr. Joseph Guillotine • Used to execute 40,000 people during the Reign of Terror
