2. Interpersonal Circumplex Measures constructed for and evaluated on groups (Strong et al., 1988; Kiesler, 1983; Wiggins, 1995)
Implicit assumption: people organize their thinking and perceptions in the same manner.
But what if…?
3. Circumplex Adherence What is adherence?
Theoretical definition: the degree to which the organization and structure of individual interpersonal cognitions and behaviors fit the normative circumplex structure
Operational definition: individual score (rc) on the PIQ-BIC.
4. Research Questions Does the cognitive structure of the interpersonal behavior of individuals adhere to the circumplex structure?
What does this adherence to the circumplex in behavior perception reveal about individuals?
5. Method Sample: Questionnaire packets were completed by 189 college students
(90 males, 99 females; mean age 19.8, SD=3.0)
Circumplex measures
Interpersonal Adjective Scale (IAS; Wiggins, 1995)
Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-C version, Alden et al., 1990)
6. Criteria Measures Personality Measure
NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI; Costa & McCrae, 1992)
Psychological Well-being measures:
Satisfaction with Life (SWL, Diener, et al. 1985)
assessing perceptions of overall quality of life.
Self-Liking and Self-Competence scales (SC and SL, Tafhrodi & Swami, 1995)

9. Research Question #1 Does the cognitive structure of the interpersonal behavior of individuals adhere to the circumplex structure?
10. Fit of Circular Order Model Via the Randomization Test of Hypothesized Order Relations and Variance Accounted For (VAF) From the Circumplex Constrained Multidimensional Scaling Solution on the Normative Scales
________________________________________________________
Scale p Correspondence Index VAF
________________________________________________________
IAS .0004 .98 .96
IIP .0004 .93 .95
________________________________________________________
11. Variance Accounted For (VAF) in Each of the Three-Way Multidimensional Scaling Solutions on the PIQ
________________________________________________________
MDS Model VAF
________________________________________________________
Unconstrained 3 dimensions .65
Unconstrained 2 dimensions .58
Unconstrained 1 dimensions .29
Circumplex Constrained 2 dimensions .58
________________________________________________________ Further analyses revealed the correlation for the constrained and unconstrained VAF’s for each individual was .99
Supporting past research by Adams & Tracey, and Gurtman & Pincus, Further analyses revealed the correlation for the constrained and unconstrained VAF’s for each individual was .99
Supporting past research by Adams & Tracey, and Gurtman & Pincus,
12. Individual Variance in Adherence Average correlation of each individual’s data to the circumplex model: Rc = .76
Range .13 - .96, SD =. 21
This variance indicates that many individuals were not well described by the normative model.
13. Alternative Structure? An unconstrained weighted MDS and weighted clustering (INDCLUS) were conducted on the 20 individuals worst fit by the circumplex (Rc < .35).
14. Unique Structures
15. Research Question #2 What does adherence (or lack thereof) to the circumplex in behavior perception reveal about
individuals?
16. Adherence as Moderator Rigidity-Outcome Relation
Rigid and extreme interpersonal behavior is related to psychological functioning
Measures
Rigidity
Interpersonal Adjective Scale (IAS)
Psychological Functioning
Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP)
Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWL)
Self-Liking Scale (SLS)
Self-Competence Scale (SCS)

18. Regression lines for interpretation of the IAS Vector score x Circumplex fit (Rc) interaction on the IIP Total score
19. Regression lines for interpretation of the IAS Vector score x Circumplex fit (Rc) interaction on the Satisfaction With Life, Self-Competence, and Self-Liking scores
20. Canonical Analysis
22. Summary of Results There is a lot of variance in the extent to which individuals use the circumplex to characterize interpersonal behaviors.
2. There does not appear to be any competing structure, just more or less fit to the circumplex.
3. It appears to have substantive value to identify those individuals using and not using the circumplex. There is some relation to psychological well-being.
4. Circumplex fit moderates the relation between interpersonal rigidity and psychological well-being.
