Achievements (Outreach) • Hosted two High-level Conferences/Seminars: • Jointly hosted Social Science Conferences with HSRC [27-29 September 2007] • Hosted President Salva Kiir’s Lecture series: “Centering Southern Sudan: Visions for Development” at the request from the Department of Foreign Affairs”

  7. Achievements (Corporate Services) • Appointment of internal auditors • Implementation of a procurement procedure • Development of divisional budgets • Compliance with the Auditor-General’s targets

Achievements (Research Output) The following targets were achieved in the 2006/07 Financial Year: • Fieldwork manuscripts published: • Western Sahara: A study on alternatives for the resolution of the dispute. Published in Africa Insight 36/2,2006 under the title ‘Prospects for the Resolution of Conflict in the Western Sahara: Solution or Revolution? • Egypt: New winds of democratization in North Africa? Published as an AISA Occasional Paper 2/2006, entitled ‘Political Reforms in the Arab World: An Analysis of the Egyptians Political Scene’ (published) • Fieldwork manuscripts submitted for publication: • DRC Presidential Elections

Governance • New Council appointed for a three-year period [01 January to 31 December 2009] • New Council Committees established: • Executive Committee • Audit Committee [also to provide governance oversight of the Council] • Research Committee [ to include the responsibility in terms of section 10(6) of the AISA Act] • HR and Finance Committee • The Council to meet at least on a quarterly basis with Committees meeting more frequently until normality is restored.

  16. Challenges • Re-define and re-position AISA in contemporary Africa • Address low staff morale • Reduce the number of labour disputes • Ensure that the Business Plan imperatives as well as Shareholder Compact targets are met

Challenges (Management) • High attrition rates both at senior and middle management. • Both first and second tier management level resigned (CEO; CFO; COO; Director: Publications; Director: Library, Acting Director: Publications; Manager:Outreach and International Liaison) • Skilled research staff resigned • Skilled support staff resigned • Leadership Vacuum • Operated 8 months without an Accounting Officer

Targets for Research Output • 26 Manuscripts based on Field Work Research (Area Studies; Sustainable Development & Self Reliance; Democratic & Governance; Peace & Security; African Diaspora & Health) • 52 High-Level positional paper (focusing of facilitating advise in terms of implementation of Public Policy) • Deliver at least 13 International Conference Papers • Contribute to NSI goal through the implementation of the highly – acclaimed Internship Programme • Foster Local & International Partnership through the Fellowship Programme.

Outreach and International Liaison • Develop a vigorous outreach and marketing strategy • Establish mutually beneficial relationships with science councils of the same ilk and tertiary institutions • Promote consciousness of Africa at grassroots level • Build strong and sustainable relationships with all Government departments including parastatals that are active on the African Continent • Promote AISA Research publications to all relevant stakeholders • Promote AISA as a platform for discourse on African affairs
