What Makes a Teacher a Professional? Culturally Relevant Instruction is more than just good teaching! Identifying Best Practices in Teaching through Research and Teaching Cherie A. McCollough, Ph.D. Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi
Why culturally responsive instruction? U.S. Department of Education estimated by 2010, minority populations will become the majority populations in our schools (USDE 2002) – WE ARE THERE! 1. Increased diversity in schools, but not among teachers. 2. Future teachers have not had sustained relationships with people from different ethnic, cultural and SES backgrounds- knowledge concerning diversity has come from media stereotypes. 3. School curriculum, methods and materials usually reflect only European-American culture. • Pre-service teaching programs do not adequately prepare educators for “culturally relevant pedagogy”* (Ladson-Billings, 1995). (*Making strong connections between home, school and community.) • When cultural differences are ignored in classrooms, student fears and alienation increase creating a serious disconnect leading to poor literacy development, higher dropout rates.
