  3. Dear Brethren, Archaeoastronomy! Yes! Archaeoastronomy! Now, you’re probably asking yourself, “What the hell is he talking about?!” Or, better yet, “What the hell does this have to do with Freemasonry?!” Well, brethren, the answer is quite simple, but in order to arrive at the answer it would behoove us to define the term. So, let us define the term. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, albeit a reputable but rather lifeless source, defines the term "Archaeoastronomy" as follows: the study of the astronomy of ancient cultures. Now, mind you, although a reputable source, the definition offered by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary does little to assist us in our understanding of the term "Archaeoastronomy" let alone its relation to Freemasonry. So, let us reference a secondary source of information to see if we find a clue. The McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th Edition, defines "Archaeoastronomy" as follows: The study which attempts to reconstruct the astronomical knowledge and activity of prehistoric people and its influence on their cultures and societies. Ah, you see. We found a clue. Now, if your still having difficulty understanding what I'm referring to, I strongly suggest you reflect upon the words purposefully underlined in the previous definition. But why, you might ask, is it necessary to reflect upon the words purposefully underlined in the previous definition? Well, simply put, it serves to illustrate my point. The point being that "Archaeoastronomy" and Freemasonry are greatly related. How so? Well, for the following reasons: 1. The influence and use of the Sun in our ritual work as the masculine expression of energy (sacred masculine) 2. The influence and use of the Moon in our ritual work as the feminine expression of energy (sacred feminine) 3. The influence and use of the "Blazing Star" (Sirius a.k.a. The Dog Star) in the first degree ritual work as an indicator of the "Blazing Star" of awakened consciousness 4. The influence and use of the celestial and terrestrial globes in our ritual as an indication and affirmation of the existence of dualism in life. 5. The influence and use of the circumpunct (the point within the circle) in our ritual mirroring Self or Oneness with the Cosmos 6. The influence, Masonic significance and observance of The Patron Saints of Freemasonry throughout the year, The Feast of St. John the Baptist on June 24th & The Festival of St. John the Evangelist on December 27th - marking the precession of the Summer and Winter Solstices 7. The significance and use of twelve craftsmen in the third degree ritual work as an exemplification of the Sun's progression through the twelve Astrological Houses of the Zodiac. You see, brethren, these are just some of the more obvious reasons why "Archaeoastronomy" and Freemasonry are greatly related. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that it is for these reasons that they are undoubtedly one in the same. Most Fraternally in Light, Luis A.
