  2. The HUGA System Help Ugliness Go Away Primary Purpose To keep a record of the types of bullying occuring. To gain insight into what children perceive as bullying behaviour so that education strategies can be designed. To identify the locations and times that most bullying occurs so that specific areas can be strictly monitored. To develop social and communal responsibility for combating bullying. To identify both bullies and victims and design appropriate intervention or support strategies. To provide a confidential platform for reporting bullying or violent behaviour.

  3. PART 1 VERBAL, SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL AND CYBER BULLYING

The HUGA Process - Learners Grade 1-2 Witnesses to and victims of bullying are required to ask their register teacher or another trusted adult to help them to complete a HUGA form and put it into a HUGA box or hand it in to their register teacher. Grade 3-7 Witnesses to and victims of bullying are required to complete a HUGA form and put it into a HUGA (Help Ugliness Go Away) box or hand it in to their register teacher. HUGA forms are available in reception and in classrooms and can be downloaded from the school website. The HUGA box is outside the HOD office.

The HUGA Process - Adults Educators: • Place all HUGA forms the HUGA box within 24 hours of having received them. • Check the HUGA page on Tuesday morning to ensure that previous entries have been signed where required. If they have not been signed then take appropriate action in line with the loss of Kudos. Principal: • Empty the HUGA boxes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and submit the contents to the HOD for that Grade or Phase within 24 hours.

The HUGA Process - Adults Heads Of Department: • Investigate or delegate an investigation into the validity of reports. • Where guilt beyond reasonable doubt is not able to be established, enter any investigate action that was taken and conclusion and file the HUGA form in the Grade HUGA File. • Where guilt is confirmed, enter the investigative action that was taken and the final conclusion and present the HUGA form at the next SMT meeting. School Management Team: • Using the information of the HUGA form, confirm the HOD’s conclusions. • Call for the learner’s homework diary. • Enter the misdemeanor, complete the HUGA form and file the HUGA form in the Grade HUGA File. • Where a stage transition has been reached, determine the most suitable course of action according to the relevant stage and carry out or delegate the determined course of action.

  9. PART 2 VIOLENT BEHAVIOUR AND PHYSICAL BULLYING

  10. The HUGA Process - Learners Report violent behaviour or physical bullying to an educator or adult staff member immediately. Do not attempt to intervene.

The HUGA Process - Adults Educators: • When having personally witnessed violent behaviour or physical bullying, complete a HUGA report and submit it to the Principal or Deputy Principal. • When violent behaviour or physical bullying is reported by a child, complete a HUGA report and submit it to the relevant HOD. HOD: • When violent behaviour or physical bullying is reported on a HUGA report, investigate or delegate an investigation into the incident. • Where guilt beyond reasonable doubt is not able to be established, enter any investigate action that was taken and conclusion and file the HUGA form in the Grade HUGA File. • Where guilt is confirmed, enter the investigative action that was taken and the final conclusion and present the HUGA form at the next SMT meeting.

The HUGA Process - Adults SMT: • Using the information of the HUGA form, confirm the HOD’s conclusions. • Call for the learner’s homework diary. • Enter the misdemeanor in the Homework Diary, complete the HUGA form and file the HUGA form in the Grade HUGA File. • Where a stage transition has been reached, determine the most suitable course of action according to the relevant stage and carry out or delegate the determined course of action. Principal: • Confirm the report as stated by the reporting educator. • Where guilt is confirmed, enter the investigative action that was taken and the final conclusion. • Enter the misdemeanor in the Homework Diary, complete the HUGA form and present the HUGA form at the next SMT meeting. • Pass the form on to the relevant HOD to file the HUGA form in the Grade HUGA File. • Where a stage transition has been reached, determine the most suitable course of action according to the relevant stage and carry out or delegate the determined course of action.
