The Order of Operations Train!
Order of Operations: What does it mean? Break it down into parts: Order Operations of Who goes first in line? -
Soooooooooo……. • The order of operations is the order in which EACH operation is performed in an expression or equation! 5 x 13 – 10 Who goes first? Do I multiply or subtract first? Why does it matter?
Why??? • There is a certain order in which multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction must be performed when they are grouped together. • If you do not use the proper order, your answer will be incorrect!
Who goes first? Just remember to excuse this lady: Aunt Sally!
To remember which order to do each operation: M A P e D S Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally!
P Parentheses exponents M D Multiply or Divide A S Add or Subtract ….and one more thing.
To do this, get on the train and go in order from left to right following PeMDAS! • Let’s try a few examples: • Which operation would come first, second, etc… • 13 + 25 x 4 • 72 ÷ 3 – 10 • 20 x (10 – 7)
